This scene sits inside the larger conflict where Jacob leaves Laban’s household after years of tension over wages, control, and family loyalties (Genesis 29–31). Laban pursues Jacob, accuses him of sneaking away and of stealing household gods, and Jacob responds with a challenge that frames a public search in front of kin (earlier in Genesis 31).
