Also, key phrases are broad: “peaceful,” “one people,” and “be ours” can describe anything from mutual partnership to attempted absorption. Finally, v. 24’s repeated “all” raises practical questions about who exactly is included (adult males, all males, citizens, resident dependents), without spelling out the categories.
This unit shows the power of public rhetoric in shaping communal decisions: security language (“peaceful”), social strategy (intermarriage), religious/identity practice (circumcision as the required condition), and economic promise (“be ours”) all function together to secure consent.
