Judah assigns Onan the family duty Judah instructs Onan to have sexual relations with Tamar, described as “your brother’s wife,” and to carry out the expected duty toward her. The stated goal is not primarily Onan’s own family growth but “raise up seed” for his dead brother—producing a child who will be credited to the brother’s line.
