Literary Context
These verses close the Joseph-in-Potiphar’s-house episode and bridge into the next scene where Joseph meets Pharaoh’s officials in confinement (39:1–40:1). The chapter has moved from Joseph’s responsible rise in a household to his sudden fall through false accusation, and now to a second rise in a new setting. The repeated focus on Yahweh “being with” Joseph and causing his work to go well echoes the earlier household trust pattern and prepares for later developments where Joseph’s competence and credibility keep expanding despite unjust circumstances.
Historical Context
The setting assumes an Egyptian administrative world where households and state institutions rely on appointed overseers. A prison connected to an official’s estate or to royal administration would need order, labor assignments, and delegated management. Foreigners could be enslaved or detained and still become useful within a controlled system if deemed reliable. The “keeper” functions as a manager accountable for security and operations, and granting Joseph broad responsibility suggests both practical need and confidence in his proven ability to handle people, tasks, and resources in a hierarchical environment.

The passage presents a clear pattern: Joseph is confined, but not abandoned. The text explicitly says “was with” Joseph, showed him kindness, and caused the prison keeper to look on him with favor (v.21). That divine help shows up through an ordinary human channel: the keeper’s growing confidence.

Why the disagreement exists The lines “whatever they did there” and “he was the doer of it” are brief and can describe either hands-on execution or overall responsibility. Likewise, “prosper” is a flexible word: it can point to visible effectiveness right now, and it can also hint at how present faithfulness becomes part of a longer storyline.
What this passage clearly contributes This text contributes a strong claim about God’s presence in unjust or limiting circumstances: the location changes, but “Yahweh was with Joseph” is repeated (vv.21, 23).
