Literary Context
This scene comes at the peak of the Joseph story’s tension. The brothers have returned to Egypt with Benjamin, and Joseph has arranged events so Benjamin appears guilty of theft, putting the family back into a crisis similar to the earlier loss of Joseph. Judah’s speech begins a long appeal (continuing beyond v. 29) that re-narrates prior episodes to persuade the ruler. By repeating dialogue and conditions, the passage shows how the brothers’ choices have narrowed and why the threatened outcome feels catastrophic for their father.
Historical Context
The setting assumes travel between Canaan and Egypt during a severe food shortage, with Egypt functioning as a regional supply center. Foreigners seeking grain would be dependent on Egyptian officials and their permissions, especially for repeat access. Family survival is tied to obtaining food, but also to keeping the household intact under an aging patriarch. The language of “servant” and “my lord” fits a world where petitioners addressed high-ranking administrators with careful deference, especially when the administrator is presented as holding power comparable to Pharaoh’s authority.
