Joseph arrives with his two sons News reaches Joseph that his father is sick, so Joseph goes to him and brings Manasseh and Ephraim. When Jacob is told Joseph is coming, he gathers his strength and sits up on the bed, signaling a deliberate, important conversation.
Jacob grounds his words in a remembered promise Jacob reminds Joseph that God Almighty appeared to him at Luz in Canaan and blessed him. He repeats the content of that blessing: Jacob would become fruitful and numerous, become a community made up of many peoples, and his descendants would receive the land as a lasting possession.
