50:7-8Meaning
Who goes, and who stays behind Joseph “goes up” to bury his father, and the narrator stresses the breadth of the Egyptian delegation: Pharaoh’s servants, the elders of Pharaoh’s household, and the elders of Egypt. Joseph’s wider family group goes as well—his household, his brothers, and his father’s household. Yet a careful exception is stated: the little children, and the flocks and herds, remain in Goshen, implying the journey is for burial and mourning rather than a full relocation.
