Finally, the text emphasizes public grief. At the threshing floor of Atad they hold an intense lament for seven days, and local Canaanites interpret what they see as “Egyptian” mourning and give the place a commemorative name.

Where interpretation differs (only where needed)

Two main questions draw different readings.

First, “He mourned for his father seven days” (v. 10): some read “he” as Joseph in particular; others read it as Joseph representing the whole group’s mourning (with Joseph as the main actor in the narrative).

Second, the location details (“beyond the Jordan,” vv. 10–11): some take this as a straightforward geographical note; others think it reflects later perspective, a different route than expected, or uncertainty about identifying the exact site.

Why the disagreement exists The Hebrew narrative often uses a singular subject (“he”) while describing actions carried out by a group, and context must decide whether the focus is on the leader or the whole company. Also, place descriptions can be oriented to the storyteller’s standpoint, and ancient place names can be hard to match confidently to modern geography.

What this passage clearly contributes This section clearly adds that Jacob’s death is honored on an international scale: Egypt’s leadership participates, and the mourning becomes a public spectacle recognized by outsiders. It also shows the family acting with both devotion (traveling to bury Jacob as intended) and practicality (leaving dependents and herds in Goshen). The naming of Abel-mizraim shows how a family event becomes a remembered landmark because it was witnessed and interpreted by the surrounding population.
