Genesis’ primeval history is set in a remembered “first world,” not tied to one named king or datable empire inside the text. In the broader ancient Near Eastern world, stories about origins and world-destroying floods circulated widely, reflecting how societies explained human violence, environmental catastrophe, and the fragility of life. Genesis engages that kind of world of ideas while telling its own narrative about humanity’s condition and divine response. The social picture fits early agrarian life: humans living on the land, domestic and wild animals nearby, and birds as part of the shared environment.
Theological Significance
Genesis 6:5–7 presents a sweeping diagnosis of humanity before the flood.
