Question 1

Who are the parties included in the covenant according to verses 12 and 15–17?

Accepted Answer

The passage repeatedly expands the covenant’s parties beyond Noah alone. Verse 12 includes God, Noah (“me and you”), and “every living creature that is with you.” Verses 15–16 repeat this with “every living creature of all flesh,” and verse 17 summarizes it as “between me and all flesh that is on the earth.” So the covenant is framed as involving humans and animals, and it is also expressed as being “between” God and the earth itself (v. 13). The text stresses breadth through repeated “every” and “all.”

Question 2

What is the “token/sign,” and where is it located in the description?

Accepted Answer

The “token” (sign) is the rainbow. God says, “I set my rainbow in the cloud” (v. 13). The location language repeats: it is “in the cloud” (vv. 13, 14, 16). The sign is therefore connected to storm conditions, not to a fixed object like a stone marker. In the passage’s own logic, the rainbow is not only a natural event but a covenant marker with an assigned meaning: it is “for a sign of a covenant between me and the earth” (v. 13).

Question 3

What sequence of events is described in verses 14–16 when clouds appear?

Accepted Answer

The text gives a simple chain. First, God brings a cloud over the earth (v. 14). Second, the rainbow is seen in the cloud (v. 14). Third, God “remembers” the covenant that includes Noah and every living creature (v. 15). Fourth, the promised result is restated: the waters will not again become a flood that destroys all flesh (v. 15). Verse 16 restates the cycle: the rainbow will be in the cloud, God will look at it, and God will remember the everlasting covenant. The emphasis is on repetition and reliability.

Question 4

What does the passage say the covenant sign is “between,” and why does that matter for meaning?

Accepted Answer

Verse 13 says the rainbow is a sign of a covenant “between me and the earth.” That phrasing matters because it frames the covenant in creation-wide terms, not only as a private promise to one family line. Verses 12 and 15–17 still name Noah and living creatures explicitly, but “earth” broadens the horizon: the sign relates to the stability of the whole inhabited world where life exists. Within the narrative, the rainbow functions as a public marker in the shared environment of humans and animals.

Question 5

What exactly is promised about future floods in verse 15, and what is left unstated?

Accepted Answer

Verse 15 promises that “the waters will no more become a flood to destroy all flesh.” The statement focuses on a specific kind of flood: one that destroys “all flesh” in the comprehensive way the flood narrative has described. What is left unstated is whether smaller, local, or regional floods will still occur (the verse doesn’t address that directly). Also unstated is the mechanism—how God ensures this outcome. The passage is mainly concerned with the pledge and its sign, not with explaining hydrology or forecasting every kind of disaster.

Question 6

How do “perpetual generations” and “everlasting covenant” function within the passage’s argument?

Accepted Answer

These phrases underline duration. Verse 12 sets the covenant’s relevance beyond the immediate post-flood moment: it is “for perpetual generations.” Verse 16 calls it an “everlasting covenant” between God and every living creature on earth. Within the passage’s argument, this means the sign is not temporary or only for Noah’s lifetime. Each later appearance of the rainbow is portrayed as connected to the same continuing commitment. The repeated, future-oriented language strengthens the point that the promise is meant to remain in effect as long as generations continue.
