Literary Context
This line comes in Haggai’s first message (1:1–11), where the prophet confronts a returned community for putting private homes ahead of the ruined temple. Immediately before this verse, the people are told to “consider” the direction their lives have taken (1:7), and this verse supplies the practical next steps. Immediately after, the message continues by pointing to the mismatch between their efforts and their disappointing results (1:9), reinforcing why the building must resume. So 1:8 functions as the centerpiece command: stop delaying and start rebuilding.
