Question 1

In verse 9, what two contrasting outcomes are described, and how do they relate to the people’s expectations?

Accepted Answer

Verse 9 sets up a sharp mismatch between expectation and result. The people were looking for “much” (a strong yield), but it “came to little.” The verse then adds a second frustration: even when they did manage to bring produce “home,” it did not stay secure or beneficial. Yahweh describes this loss as something he “blew…away,” reinforcing that the disappointment was not only at harvest time but continued afterward. The verse presents these outcomes as repeated experience, not a one-time bad season.

Question 2

What explanation does the passage itself give for why the harvest shrank (v.9)?

Accepted Answer

The text gives a direct explanation: Yahweh says the shortage happened “because of my house that lies waste, while each of you is busy with his own house.” The point is not simply that people had houses, but that they were occupied with private projects while Yahweh’s house remained neglected. The passage treats this mismatch of priorities as the reason the hoped-for “much” became “little,” and why what was gathered did not endure. The explanation is stated as Yahweh’s own assessment rather than a human guess.

Question 3

How do verses 10–11 expand the problem from a smaller harvest to a wider crisis?

Accepted Answer

Verse 10 moves from disappointing yields to a breakdown in the whole moisture-to-produce chain: the heavens “withhold the dew,” and the earth “withholds its fruit.” Verse 11 expands further by naming drought targets in widening circles: land and mountains, then specific products (grain, new wine, oil), then everything the ground produces. It finally includes people, livestock, and “all the labor of the hands,” showing that the drought is portrayed as affecting both natural systems and human economic outcomes.

Question 4

What does the repeated “house” language in verse 9 emphasize, and what contrast does it create?

Accepted Answer

The repeated word “house” emphasizes competing centers of attention. On one side is Yahweh’s “house,” described as lying in ruins or being left undone. On the other side is “his own house,” describing individual households. The contrast is not subtle: Yahweh’s house is neglected, while each person remains busy with personal housing concerns. In the flow of the message (Hag 1:2–8), this contrast supports the claim that the community’s hardship has a moral-spiritual dimension tied to what they chose to build and maintain first.

Question 5

What is the effect of Yahweh asking “Why?” and then answering it (v.9)?

Accepted Answer

The “Why?” functions like a public explanation that removes ambiguity. It signals that the shortage is not being left to speculation (“Was it weather? politics? chance?”). Yahweh both raises and resolves the question, presenting a definitive reason tied to the condition of his house and the people’s focus on their own houses. This also strengthens the passage’s central claim of divine involvement: Yahweh is not only observing outcomes but interpreting them and taking responsibility for the forces that made the outcomes happen.

Question 6

What does “I blew it away” (v.9) contribute to the picture of loss, even before verse 10 mentions dew and drought?

Accepted Answer

“I blew it away” pictures loss as something that happens after the harvest is gathered, like produce or profit being scattered, spoiled, or otherwise removed. It makes the frustration feel immediate and personal: even successful effort does not translate into lasting benefit. Before the passage even names environmental causes (dew withheld, drought called), it presents the community’s economy as unstable at the point of storage and security. The statement also reinforces that Yahweh claims agency over the disappointing results, not merely awareness of them.

Question 7

In verse 11, why might the text list both natural elements (land, mountains) and living targets (people, cattle) along with “labor of the hands”?

Accepted Answer

The list shows comprehensive reach. Natural elements (land, mountains) indicate the physical environment; named crops (grain, wine, oil) point to key economic staples; people and cattle show the drought’s impact on survival and livelihood; and “all the labor of the hands” connects the crisis to human work and its outcomes. Together, these categories communicate that the problem is not confined to a corner of society or a single sector. The passage frames the drought as a community-wide disruption, reaching from nature into daily life and economic productivity.
