Question 1

In verse 11, what two groups are described, and what relationship is stated between them?

Accepted Answer

Verse 11 names “the one who sanctifies” and “those who are sanctified.” It then says both are “from one,” and connects that shared source to Jesus calling them “brothers.” The passage’s basic relationship is not only functional (one acts, others receive) but familial and public: the sanctifier does not distance himself from the sanctified. The writer is arguing that Jesus’ role in making people holy comes with a genuine shared connection that supports the family term “brothers,” rather than treating them as outsiders.

Question 2

What is the immediate reason given for why Jesus is “not ashamed” to call them brothers (v. 11)?

Accepted Answer

The text grounds “not ashamed” in the claim that the sanctifier and the sanctified are “all from one.” Whatever “from one” is taken to mean (one God as source, one human family line, or a shared human nature), the logic in the verse is straightforward: shared origin leads to shared kinship language. The writer is not primarily giving an emotional explanation (“Jesus is kind”), but a reasoned explanation tied to identity and shared source: it fits who he is to claim them as family.

Question 3

How does the quotation in verse 12 support the idea of Jesus identifying with “brothers”?

Accepted Answer

Verse 12 pictures the speaker declaring God’s name “to my brothers” and singing praise “in the midst of the congregation.” That imagery places the speaker inside the worshiping group, speaking and praising among them rather than observing from above. In Hebrews 2:11–13, this quotation functions as evidence that the family language (“brothers”) and the public association (worship together, in assembly) are consistent with Scripture’s way of speaking. It strengthens the claim that Jesus aligns himself with his people in their gathered life.

Question 4

What do the two quotations in verse 13 add beyond verse 12?

Accepted Answer

Verse 12 emphasizes shared worship among “brothers.” Verse 13 adds two further notes: first, the speaker’s trust in God (“I will put my trust in him”), and second, the speaker’s solidarity with a group called “the children whom God has given me.” Together they portray the speaker as relying on God and standing with those whom God has entrusted. This builds on verse 11’s family logic by showing not only closeness (“brothers”) but also shared dependence and a God-given relationship to the group (“children given”).

Question 5

What different meanings are possible for “from one,” and how does each meaning affect the emphasis of the passage?

Accepted Answer

“From one” can be read as “from one God,” highlighting a shared Father as ultimate source; this stresses God’s family and Jesus’ open identification with God’s people. It can also be read as “from one ancestor” or “one shared human source,” emphasizing Jesus’ real connection to humanity. A broader reading is “from one shared nature,” stressing that the sanctifier truly shares what the sanctified are. In each case, the result in the verse is the same: shared source is the stated reason Jesus can call them brothers without shame.

Question 6

In this unit, what does “sanctifies/sanctified” seem to mean from the immediate context, and what does the passage not spell out?

Accepted Answer

Within 2:11–13, “sanctifies/sanctified” identifies roles: Jesus is the one who makes holy, and believers are those being made holy. The text ties this directly to family identity and public association. However, these verses do not spell out the mechanism or full process—how this holiness happens, its stages, or its relation to other themes later in Hebrews. The emphasis here is relational and identity-focused: the sanctifying work goes with shared origin and shared family status, supported by Scripture’s depiction of the speaker among the worshiping community.

Question 7

How do the terms “brothers” and “children” function together in verses 11–13?

Accepted Answer

“Brothers” (vv. 11–12) highlights kinship and shared standing: Jesus is not ashamed to name them as family, and the quoted line places him among “brothers” in the assembly. “Children” (v. 13) adds a second family image that highlights God’s role: they are “children whom God has given me.” Read together, the terms reinforce the same core idea—Jesus’ close identification with his people—while “children” can add the nuance of God’s initiative in giving or entrusting this family group to the speaker.
