13:12Meaning
Stored-up wrongdoing Ephraim’s iniquity is said to be “bound up” and his sin “laid up in store.” The picture is of something packaged and kept, not erased. What Ephraim has done remains on record and is being held for the moment when it will matter.
Unit 2 (v. 13a): Crisis arrives like labor pains
“Labor pains” come upon him. The imagery suggests a painful, pressing, and time-limited crisis that cannot simply be talked away. It is something that overtakes him rather than something he calmly schedules.
Unit 3 (v. 13b): The unwise child who will not be born
Ephraim is compared to an “unwise son,” a child who fails to act at the decisive moment. The saying is that when the time comes to emerge, he does not move through the “place of the breaking forth of children,” lingering where delay becomes deadly. The image portrays self-destructive hesitation when a hard but necessary transition is required.
