Historical Context
Isaiah spoke in Judah during a time when Jerusalem and its temple were central to national life and when public worship followed a regular schedule of sacrifices, incense, Sabbaths, and monthly and seasonal gatherings. Political pressure from expanding empires and internal inequality could coexist with impressive religious activity, allowing leaders to project stability while injustice persisted. The passage assumes a functioning temple setting (“my courts”) and a community that is diligent in formal observances, yet accused of violent practice, suggesting a society where public piety and social harm could run side by side.
