Question 1

Why does the passage open by calling the audience “rulers of Sodom” and “people of Gomorrah” (v. 10)?

Accepted Answer

The opening address functions like a verbal shock. The text is not claiming they are literally from those cities; it uses notorious names to force the audience to hear the warning as a moral indictment. By calling both leaders and ordinary people by these names, the passage spreads responsibility across society, not only a few individuals. The effect is to frame everything that follows—sacrifices, festivals, prayer—as coming from a community that resembles a famously corrupt example, so their religious activity must be evaluated in that moral light.

Question 2

List the worship activities mentioned in vv. 11–15. What is the overall pattern in how they are presented?

Accepted Answer

The passage mentions many sacrifices (burnt offerings, fat, animal blood), appearing before God in the temple courts, offerings and incense, new moons, Sabbaths, convocations, appointed feasts, and visible prayer gestures with many prayers. The pattern is a tightening progression: it moves from sacrificial quantity (“multitude”), to temple presence (“appear before me”), to the calendar and assemblies, and finally to prayer. At each stage the response is stronger refusal. The text highlights abundance and regularity of worship, then declares it unwanted and unbearable.

Question 3

What reasons does Yahweh give for rejecting their worship, and where are those reasons most explicit?

Accepted Answer

The clearest reason is stated in v. 15: “your hands are full of blood.” That ties rejected prayer directly to violent wrongdoing. Earlier descriptions support this logic by portraying their worship as offensive (“vain offerings,” “abomination”) and their gatherings as “evil assemblies,” implying that what is happening in their communal life contradicts what worship claims to express. The passage does not say they failed to follow a schedule; it says their moral condition makes their approach like “trampling” God’s courts and makes God refuse to look or listen.

Question 4

How should “Who has required this at your hand, to trample my courts?” (v. 12) be understood within the passage’s argument?

Accepted Answer

Within the flow, the question undermines the assumption that showing up at the temple automatically pleases God. The wording suggests their “coming” is not experienced as reverent approach but as destructive intrusion (“trample”). The passage does not give a detailed theory of how temple worship should work; it uses the question to deny legitimacy to their current practice. The force is: even if they think they are doing what is required, God rejects this form of attendance because it is disconnected from moral reality and so becomes offensive.

Question 5

What do the phrases “vain offerings” and “abomination” (v. 13) communicate about the problem, using only what the passage itself indicates?

Accepted Answer

“Vain offerings” signals that the offerings are treated as empty—ritual without the substance God seeks. Calling incense “an abomination” intensifies the point: something normally associated with worship is now labeled disgusting and unacceptable. The passage itself links this evaluation to the broader description of “evil assemblies” and the climactic charge about “hands…full of blood.” So the problem is not that offerings and incense are inherently meaningless, but that in their current moral setting they become empty and offensive, not pleasing.

Question 6

In vv. 14–15, what does the text claim about God’s response to sacred times and to prayer?

Accepted Answer

For sacred times, Yahweh says he “hates” their new moons and appointed feasts and describes them as a burden he is tired of carrying. For prayer, the text says that even visible gestures (“spread forth your hands”) and many prayers will not be heard; God will “hide” his eyes and refuse to listen. The passage grounds this refusal in the condition of the worshipers (“hands are full of blood”), showing that the issue reaches beyond ritual performance to the moral state and actions of the community.

Question 7

What social scope does the passage assume when it critiques worship (leaders, individuals, gatherings)?

Accepted Answer

The critique is aimed at the whole community. Verse 10 addresses both “rulers” and “people,” suggesting corruption is not limited to private individuals or only to officials. The repeated references to convocations, assemblies, and appointed feasts show that the setting is public and communal, not merely personal devotion. The language about “evil assemblies” implies that wrongdoing is present within the gathered worshiping community. The final image of “hands…full of blood” can fit individual acts, but in context it also plausibly reflects a broader social pattern of violence and injustice.
