Forsaken people, foreign customs, and foreign ties The verse opens by stating that “you have forsaken your people, the house of Jacob,” then gives reasons. The people are “filled from the east” (taking in eastern customs), practice divination like the Philistines, and “clasp hands” with foreigners, suggesting entangling partnerships or dependence.
A land saturated with wealth and military assets Three times the land is described as overflowing: silver and gold without limit, treasures without end, and then horses and chariots without end. The picture is not merely that resources exist, but that accumulation and armament dominate the landscape.
A land saturated with idols and handmade worship The same “full of” pattern continues: the land is full of idols. The people bow to what they themselves produced—“the work of their own hands,” things their “fingers have made”—highlighting the human origin and control behind the objects of worship.
Literary Context
This unit follows Isaiah’s opening vision of a future in which Zion becomes a center of instruction and peace (2:1–4). The contrast is sharp: instead of nations streaming to learn, Judah is described as taking in outside customs and substituting human-made objects for true worship. Verses 6–9 function as a charge sheet that supports the larger warning that pride will be leveled and misplaced trust exposed (continuing in 2:10–22). The movement is from cause (“because…”) to evidence (“their land is full…”) to outcome (people brought down).
Historical Context
Isaiah’s ministry spans the late eighth century BC, when Judah lived under the growing dominance of the Assyrian empire. Regional trade and diplomacy brought steady cultural exchange, along with pressure to adopt foreign rituals and seek supernatural guidance for security. Prosperity among elites could grow through commerce and tribute systems, while military investment in horses and chariots signaled attempts to compete within the era’s power politics. In that setting, handmade cult objects were common across the region, and alliances with surrounding peoples often carried religious and cultural influence.
Theological Significance
Isaiah 2:6–9 explains a break in relationship: the “house of Jacob” is described as forsaken, and the text gives reasons. The people are pictured as absorbing outside practices (“from the east”), turning to divination, and forming close ties with foreigners. The repeated wording (“full of…”) piles up evidence: the land is overflowing with wealth, military power (horses and chariots), and idols made by human hands.

A key point is not just that these things exist, but that they dominate the society. The language suggests saturation and excess, with “no end” to treasures and military hardware. Idolatry is framed as worshiping what people themselves produced, underlining the mismatch between the maker and what is treated as god.
Who is speaking to whom in verse 6 (“you have forsaken your people”): Some read it as Isaiah addressing God (explaining why God has abandoned Judah). Others read it as Isaiah speaking to God’s representative leadership or to Judah, accusing them of abandoning their own people. Either way, the verse functions as a “because…” introduction to the charges that follow.
What “filled from the east” means: Some take it mainly as religious and social influence (ritual practices, divination, worldview). Others include material or cultural imports more broadly. In context, the next lines (soothsaying; foreign ties) make spiritual and social practices the clearest emphasis.
What “don’t forgive them” is doing in verse 9: Some read it as the prophet’s urgent plea for no leniency in the face of entrenched wrongdoing. Others hear it as a declared stance within the prophetic message that judgment is now set in motion. The surrounding section (2:10–22) continues the theme of humbling pride, which supports the idea that the warning is escalating toward judgment.
Why the disagreement exists The Hebrew permits more than one way to hear pronouns and shifts in address, and prophetic speech can move quickly between speaking about God and speaking to God. Several phrases (“filled from the east,” “clasp hands”) are brief and image-heavy, so interpreters must infer the specific social realities behind them.
What this passage clearly contributes The passage links compromise in worship and guidance (divination; idols) with misplaced sources of security (wealth and military resources) and with social dependence on outsiders. It also frames these as covenant-level failures serious enough to lead to humiliation (“man is bowed down”) and to the suspension of easy pardon at this point in the argument.
