The complaint—God has not seen, and justice is slipping away The prophet challenges the people for saying that their “way” is hidden from Yahweh and that the “justice due” to them has been passed over. The point is not that they deny God exists, but that they believe God is not paying attention to their path and is not acting on their behalf.
The answer begins—God does not tire and cannot be out-thought A string of questions (“Have you not known?… not heard?”) treats the solution as something they should already grasp. Yahweh is described as everlasting and as the Creator of the whole earth. Unlike humans, God does not faint or grow weary, and God’s understanding is beyond tracing out.
God supplies strength; humans, even prime humans, still fail Because God does not run out of strength, God can give power to the faint and increase strength for the person with no might. The text underlines the contrast by noting that even youths—symbols of peak energy—become exhausted, and even the strongest young men can collapse completely.
Literary Context
This unit sits within Isaiah 40’s larger message of comfort and reassurance after a long season of distress. The chapter repeatedly shifts from human discouragement and smallness to God’s vastness and steady care: God measures the world with ease, rules over nations, and knows each star by name. Verses 27–31 directly address a spoken complaint (“Why do you say…?”) and then counter it with a chain of reminders about who God is and what God does. The logic moves from accusation, to God’s character, to the practical effect on the exhausted.
Historical Context
The speakers are addressed as “Jacob” and “Israel,” suggesting a community identity shaped by covenant history and national trauma. The complaint fits people who feel overlooked in a time of power imbalance, displacement, or prolonged uncertainty, when justice seems delayed and daily life is draining. Isaiah 40 often reads like encouragement to a worn-down people living under stronger imperial forces and wondering whether their God still notices them. The passage does not describe the political details here, but it assumes a setting where hope is thin, strength is low, and the community questions whether their case is receiving attention.
Theological Significance
Isaiah 40:27–31 begins with a community complaint: Jacob/Israel think their “way” is hidden from Yahweh and that the “justice due” to them has been passed over (explicit, v.27). The reply does not start by denying their exhaustion; it answers by re-describing who Yahweh is (explicit, v.28) and what Yahweh does for exhausted people (explicit, vv.29–31).

Their strength is renewed, pictured as rising on eagle wings, then as sustained movement: running without weariness and walking without fainting. The passage’s core contrast is between human limits and God’s limitless endurance. Humans—even the strongest “youths” and “young men”—eventually collapse (explicit, v.30). Yahweh, the everlasting Creator, does not faint or grow weary, and cannot be fully “searched out” in understanding (explicit, v.28). Because God’s strength does not run out, God is able to supply strength to the faint and powerless (explicit, v.29).
The closing promise centers on “waiting for Yahweh” (explicit, v.31). The result is renewed strength and sustained endurance described with layered images: rising like eagles, then running and walking without collapse (explicit, v.31). The imagery emphasizes ongoing capacity, not only a brief surge.
Two phrases invite more than one reasonable reading.
“My way is hidden” / “justice due to me is passed over” (v.27). Some take this mainly as a complaint about suffering being unseen and unheard (God is not noticing). Others read it more as blocked future and delayed vindication (God is not acting to restore what is right).
“Wait for Yahweh” (v.31). Some hear “wait” primarily as inward trust and hope. Others emphasize patient endurance over time, including continuing to live under unresolved conditions while expecting God to act.
The passage uses short, compressed phrases (“way,” “justice due,” “wait”) that can cover both emotional experience (feeling overlooked) and concrete outcomes (vindication/deliverance). The poem answers with God’s character rather than specifying a particular event or timeline, which leaves room for readers to connect the terms to different kinds of distress.
