Shared ground

Isaiah 54:13–14 speaks to a restored Zion/community and describes what a stable future looks like in ordinary life. The text makes two linked claims: God will be directly involved in forming the next generation (“taught by Yahweh”), and that divine shaping results in “great…peace” for the children. Then it shifts to the community’s overall conditions: being “established in righteousness” leads to a life where oppression and terror are kept at a distance.

A major theme is that security is not presented as self-made or merely political. Stability, peace, and freedom from intimidation are pictured as flowing from God’s action and the right ordering of communal life.

Where interpretation differs (only where needed)

One difference is what “all your children” refers to. Some read it mainly as literal offspring in families of the restored city. Others take it more broadly as the community’s members (the next generation and, by extension, all who belong to Zion).

Another difference is what “taught by Yahweh” implies about the means. Some hear it as unusually direct divine instruction. Others see it as God teaching through normal channels (leaders, wisdom, Torah instruction), with the point being that God is the ultimate source and guarantor.

A third difference is the meaning of “in righteousness.” Some read it mainly as moral faithfulness and justice within the community. Others read it as God setting things right for Zion—giving a “right footing” and public vindication that produces stability.

Why the disagreement exists

The wording is broad and poetic, and the passage sits in a chapter full of city-and-family imagery. That makes it unclear how narrowly to define “children,” and whether “righteousness” describes the people’s character, God’s gift of a right order, or both. Also, “oppression” and “terror” can describe concrete threats from enemies and exploiters, but they also overlap with lived fear—so interpreters weigh external dangers and internal experience differently.

What this passage clearly contributes

Explicitly, the text claims (1) comprehensive divine teaching for the community’s children, (2) abundant peace for them, (3) the community’s firm establishment “in righteousness,” and (4) resulting distance from oppression and terror, connected to the removal of fear. The passage contributes a tightly connected vision: God’s instruction shapes a generation, peace grows from that formation, and a rightly ordered foundation leads to security where intimidation does not set the tone of life (within the larger rebuilding hope of Isaiah 54; Isaiah 54:13–14).
