A decision to recount Yahweh’s kindness The speaker announces, “I will make mention” of Yahweh’s “lovingkindnesses” and “praises,” meaning he will bring them to mind and speak of them. The praise is measured “according to all” that Yahweh has “bestowed” on “us” and on “the house of Israel.” The verse piles up phrases—goodness, mercies, a multitude of kindnesses—to make the main point: what Israel has received came from Yahweh’s generous compassion.
Yahweh’s claim on the people and the resulting rescue The verse gives a reason (“For he said”) for the praise: Yahweh identified Israel as “my people” and expected them to be “children who will not deal falsely.” On that basis, the text says, “so he was their Savior”—his relationship claim leads into his role as rescuer.

Literary Context
These verses open a new stretch in Isaiah 63 that shifts from dramatic imagery of Yahweh’s warrior-like victory (63:1–6) to remembered kindness and a communal-sounding reflection. The tone becomes more like a spoken remembrance that sets up lament and appeal in the verses that follow (63:10–64:12). The movement begins with praise (v. 7), then gives the reason for that praise by recalling Yahweh’s stance toward the people (v. 8), and then expands the memory with vivid descriptions of shared distress, rescue, redemption, and carrying (v. 9).
Historical Context
Isaiah speaks to Judah across the late eighth century BC, when small kingdoms in the Levant lived under pressure from expanding empires, especially Assyria. In that environment, national survival involved warfare, forced tribute, displacement, and political instability. This passage looks back to earlier defining experiences of Israel’s life, presenting them as a storehouse of remembered help from Yahweh “in the days of old.” Such backward-looking rehearsal of past deliverance would function as communal memory during later crises, strengthening identity and hope when present circumstances felt threatened or diminished.
Theological Significance
Isaiah 63:7–9 opens with a deliberate choice to what Yahweh has done. The speaker focuses on Yahweh’s repeated kindness, “praises,” “mercies,” and “many” acts of compassion toward “the house of Israel” (explicit textual claim). Who is speaking in v. 7 (“I will make mention”)? Some read the “I” as the prophet speaking as an individual. Others think it is a representative voice for the community (or a leader speaking for the people), since the section leads into a broader communal lament (63:10–64:12). Both readings keep the same main point: public remembrance of Yahweh’s past compassion.
“Children who will not deal falsely” (v. 8): expectation or description? Some take this line as Yahweh’s confidence in their loyalty (a description of what they are). Others take it as an idealized hope or stated expectation that is soon disappointed by the rebellion reported in the next verse (63:10). In either case, the text ties Yahweh’s saving action to his claim, “my people.”
“The angel of his presence” (v. 9): who/what is this? Some interpret it as a distinct heavenly messenger through whom Yahweh rescues. Others hear it as a poetic way of saying “Yahweh himself, personally present,” without focusing on a separate figure. The verse itself keeps the focus on Yahweh’s love-driven rescue, whether described directly or through an agent.
The passage uses compressed, poetic wording that can be read more than one way: first-person speech (“I”), family language (“children”), and vivid imagery (“angel of his presence,” “he was afflicted”). The immediate context also shifts quickly: verses 7–9 highlight past compassion, while verse 10 turns to rebellion. That makes it natural to ask whether v. 8 reports what Israel truly was, or what Yahweh said/expected before their failure.
These verses supply a theological memory: Yahweh’s relationship with Israel is marked by abundant compassion, deliberate rescue, and long-term sustaining care (explicit textual claims).
