Question 1

What identifying details about Jeremiah does verse 1 give, and what do they establish?

Accepted Answer

Verse 1 identifies the prophet by name (“Jeremiah”), by family (“son of Hilkiah”), by social setting (“of the priests”), and by location (“in Anathoth in the land of Benjamin”). These details establish that Jeremiah is not presented as an anonymous voice: he comes from a known community and place. The priestly link places him within Israel’s religious life, while “Anathoth” and “Benjamin” locate him geographically near Judah’s center of power without saying he is a Jerusalem priest. The verse functions like an introduction that anchors the book’s voice in a specific identity and setting.

Question 2

How do verses 2–3 define the time span of Jeremiah’s prophetic activity?

Accepted Answer

Verses 2–3 define the span by naming kings and by marking both a starting point and an endpoint. The start is “in the days of Josiah… in the thirteenth year of his reign,” and the message continues “also in the days of Jehoiakim” and up to “the end of the eleventh year of Zedekiah.” The endpoint is connected with a national event: “the carrying away of Jerusalem captive in the fifth month.” The effect is to place Jeremiah’s ministry across multiple administrations, covering Judah’s final years up to exile.

Question 3

What does the repeated phrase “the word of Yahweh came” contribute to the passage’s meaning?

Accepted Answer

The phrase “the word of Yahweh came” shifts the focus from Jeremiah’s background to the source of his message. The passage does not yet describe Jeremiah’s calling scene (that follows), but it already claims that what Jeremiah speaks is tied to divine communication. At the same time, the book is introduced as “the words of Jeremiah,” keeping both elements in view: Jeremiah is the human speaker, and Yahweh is presented as the initiating source. The heading therefore frames later material as prophecy occurring in real history, not timeless sayings.

Question 4

Why might the author include both place (Anathoth/Benjamin) and political rulers (kings of Judah) in this opening frame?

Accepted Answer

Including place and rulers anchors the book in concrete coordinates: where Jeremiah comes from and when he speaks. “Anathoth in Benjamin” tells readers Jeremiah is connected to a priestly town near Jerusalem, while the named kings locate the words within Judah’s last decades. This combination anticipates that Jeremiah’s messages will interact with temple life, leadership decisions, and national crisis. The heading does not interpret those interactions yet; it simply establishes that the prophecies belong to a specific social world (priests, towns, territories) and a specific political timeline (successive kings leading to exile).

Question 5

What is the function of the “fifth month” detail at the end of verse 3?

Accepted Answer

The “fifth month” functions as a precise historical marker attached to the “carrying away of Jerusalem captive.” Even without explaining the event, the date-like detail signals that the exile is not a vague idea but a remembered occurrence tied to a calendar. In a heading, such specificity strengthens the timeline and frames Jeremiah’s prophetic career as running up to a known turning point. The verse does not specify what happened in that month beyond the captivity reference, but it invites readers to treat the exile as the closing horizon for the period being introduced.

Question 6

What observations can be made about how Jeremiah’s identity is presented in relation to the priesthood in verse 1?

Accepted Answer

Verse 1 connects Jeremiah to “the priests who were in Anathoth,” but it does not explicitly say Jeremiah himself served as a priest in the temple or held priestly office. The wording at minimum places him in a priestly family or community context. This association can help explain why later parts of the book engage with religious leadership and temple-centered issues, though those connections are not argued here. The verse’s main point is identification: Jeremiah belongs to a recognizable priestly environment in a particular town within Benjamin’s territory.
