Question 1

What does Yahweh instruct Jeremiah to do in verse 6, and what does the setting imply about the message?

Accepted Answer

Verse 6 is framed as direct instruction: Jeremiah must “proclaim all these words” publicly “in the cities of Judah” and “in the streets of Jerusalem.” The setting implies broad exposure, not a private warning to elites. It also suggests the message is meant for ordinary communal life where people gather, trade, and talk. The content of the proclamation is also specified: “Hear the words of this covenant, and do them.” So the assignment is not merely to inform; it is to publicly restate covenant demands in a way that confronts the whole community.

Question 2

In verses 6–7, how are “hear,” “do,” and “obey my voice” related?

Accepted Answer

The passage links listening and action tightly. In verse 6, the public message is to “hear” the covenant words and “do” them. Verse 7 restates that same demand in a shorter form: “Obey my voice.” Together they show that “hearing” is not just receiving information; it is attentive acceptance that leads to concrete obedience. Verse 8 confirms this by describing failure in both dimensions: they “didn’t obey” and they didn’t even “turn their ear.” The text treats refusal to listen and refusal to act as part of one pattern.

Question 3

What time span does verse 7 cover, and why does the passage emphasize it?

Accepted Answer

Verse 7 reaches back “in the day” Yahweh brought Israel out of Egypt and extends “even to this day.” That is a long sweep of history, not a recent misunderstanding. The emphasis supports the passage’s logic: the coming consequences are not a rash reaction but the result of sustained, repeated urging (“rising early and protesting,” i.e., persistent warning). By highlighting duration and repetition, the text portrays Judah’s covenant breaking as long-standing and well-addressed, making the current proclamation an intensification of an old message rather than a new demand.

Question 4

According to verse 8, what specific responses are described as the people’s failure?

Accepted Answer

Verse 8 stacks several descriptions to show comprehensive refusal. First, they “didn’t obey,” which points to noncompliance with what was commanded. Second, they did not “turn their ear,” indicating a deeper resistance at the level of attention and willingness to hear. Third, they “walked everyone in the stubbornness of their evil heart,” describing a continued, chosen direction of life. The repetition (“didn’t obey… didn’t listen… walked…”) presents failure as persistent and personal (“everyone”), not an isolated slip or a purely external constraint.

Question 5

How does verse 8 connect disobedience to the phrase “I brought on them all the words of this covenant”?

Accepted Answer

Verse 8 gives a cause-and-effect chain. The people did not do what Yahweh “commanded them to do,” and the result is that Yahweh “brought on them all the words of this covenant.” The phrase suggests that the covenant contained stated outcomes tied to obedience and disobedience; now those stated outcomes are arriving. The wording “words of this covenant” can sound abstract, but the logic implies real consequences in history that match what the covenant had already declared would happen if the people persisted in refusing to hear and do.

Question 6

What does the passage suggest about responsibility: is the problem portrayed as ignorance, inability, or refusal?

Accepted Answer

The passage presents the core problem as refusal rather than ignorance or lack of opportunity. The command is public and widespread (v. 6), and Yahweh claims he has repeatedly urged obedience over a long period beginning with the exodus (v. 7). Verse 8 then describes a willful pattern: they did not listen, and each person continued walking in stubbornness. While the text does not analyze psychological capacity in modern terms, its emphasis falls on persistent non-listening in the face of repeated warning, leading to consequences that are portrayed as covenant-consistent.
