Places like Memphis and Tahpanhes point to Egyptian centers and signal real political entanglements, whether through treaties, tribute, or seeking military backing. The passage reflects a world where foreign armies could burn cities and depopulate regions, and where turning to a stronger neighbor often seemed like the only practical option.
Theological Significance
Jeremiah 2:14–19 explains Judah/Israel’s suffering as a shocking reversal: a people not “born” for slavery has become prey (vv. 14–15).
