Question 1

In verses 14–15, what observations does the passage make about Israel’s status and condition, and why is it framed as a “why” question?

Accepted Answer

Verses 14–15 present Israel’s condition as an abnormal reversal. The questions (“Is Israel a servant… why has he become a prey?”) imply this outcome is not what should be expected for this people. The imagery then supplies visible evidence: “young lions” roar and attack, the land becomes waste, and cities are burned and emptied. Framing it as a “why” question sets up the passage’s later explanation (vv. 17–19). It pushes the audience to connect the disaster to a cause rather than treating it as mere bad luck or a normal political setback.

Question 2

What do the “young lions” accomplish in verse 15, and what does that contribute to the argument of the passage?

Accepted Answer

The “young lions” are depicted as aggressive attackers whose actions produce concrete results: the land is devastated and the towns are burned and left without inhabitants. Whether they are a specific empire or a general image of invaders, their role is to make the suffering undeniable and public. This contributes to the passage’s logic: first, name the reality of ruin; then, ask why it happened (v. 14); then, identify responsibility and the deeper cause (v. 17). The invader image highlights that the consequences are not mild or private—they are national and destructive.

Question 3

What is the effect of naming Memphis and Tahpanhes in verse 16, and what does “broken the crown of your head” communicate?

Accepted Answer

By naming Memphis and Tahpanhes—Egyptian centers—the passage makes the threat and shame feel historically grounded rather than abstract. The phrase “broken the crown of your head” communicates humiliation and loss of dignity or status. It can suggest a political defeat (loss of rule or independence) and also public shaming (a blow to honor). In the flow of the passage, Egypt is not presented as a reliable rescue; Egypt-associated actors are part of the humiliation. That sets up the later critique of heading toward Egypt for “waters” (v. 18).

Question 4

According to verse 17, what is the stated reason these troubles happened, and how is responsibility expressed?

Accepted Answer

Verse 17 states the reason directly: “Haven’t you procured this to yourself” because “you have forsaken Yahweh your God, when he led you by the way.” Responsibility is expressed as self-involvement; the troubles are not described as disconnected from their choices. The key action is relational and directional: abandoning Yahweh in the middle of being guided. The verse does not deny foreign aggression, but it frames that aggression within a larger moral-spiritual cause. The passage treats the abandonment of Yahweh as the decisive root behind the external disasters.

Question 5

In verse 18, what are the “way to Egypt” and “way to Assyria,” and why is “drinking waters” used as the image?

Accepted Answer

The “way to Egypt” and “way to Assyria” depict deliberate movement toward major powers for something essential. “Drinking waters” (Shihor/Nile for Egypt; “the River,” commonly understood as the Euphrates region for Assyria/Mesopotamia) is an image of dependence—seeking supply, security, or life from those sources. In context, it functions as a critique: instead of relying on Yahweh, the people pursue foreign backing. The metaphor can point to political reliance (alliances and protection), and it may also hint at broader dependence that includes adopting foreign practices or loyalties.

Question 6

How does verse 19 describe the relationship between wrongdoing and punishment, and what does “my fear is not in you” add to the diagnosis?

Accepted Answer

Verse 19 presents wrongdoing as self-correcting in a painful way: “Your own wickedness shall correct you, and your backsliding shall reprove you.” The idea is not merely that punishment is imposed from outside, but that their chosen path carries built-in consequences that expose its folly. The result is described as “evil” and “bitter,” emphasizing the experiential cost of forsaking Yahweh. “My fear is not in you” adds a relational-moral diagnosis: they lack reverent regard for Yahweh’s authority and presence, which helps explain why they keep turning elsewhere despite the harm.
