Return and selective gathering to Zion Yahweh addresses the people as children who have turned away and commands them to return. The reason given is relational commitment (“I am a husband to you”). Literary Context
This unit sits inside Jeremiah’s early preaching that confronts Israel/Judah for unfaithfulness using family and marriage language (Jeremiah 2–3). After exposing betrayal and stubbornness, the speech pivots to an offer of return and a picture of restoration. The logic moves from call (“Return”) to gathering (“bring you to Zion”), to renewed leadership (“shepherds”), to a transformed center of worship and identity (the ark no longer defining the future), and finally to a widened horizon where Jerusalem becomes a focal point for nations and for the reunion of Judah and Israel.
Historical Context
Jeremiah preached in Judah’s last decades before Babylon’s conquest, when the old northern kingdom (“Israel”) had already been shattered and many from the north had been displaced. Jerusalem remained the political and temple center, while people wrestled with what security, leadership, and national identity meant amid regional upheaval. References to “the land of the north” fit the experience of removal and the fear of future invasions from that direction. Against this backdrop, the passage imagines regathering, repaired national unity, and a renewed way of relating to Jerusalem and its symbols.
Theological Significance
