Question 1

In v.8, what is the problem with the “lying words,” and what result do they fail to produce?

Accepted Answer

Verse 8 focuses on misplaced trust: the people “trust in lying words.” The passage doesn’t merely call the words untrue; it also says they “can’t profit,” meaning they cannot deliver the benefit people expect. The text frames them as a false source of security or advantage. This sets up the rest of the unit: after naming blatant wrongdoing (v.9), the people still approach the temple confidently (v.10). The “profit” they seek is likely some form of safety or exemption, but Jeremiah’s point is that the slogan cannot actually provide it.

Question 2

How does v.9 combine wrongs against other people with wrongs against God?

Accepted Answer

Verse 9 mixes social sins and religious disloyalty in one rapid list. It includes acts that directly harm others—stealing, murder, adultery—and a public breakdown of truthfulness (“swear falsely”). Then it adds explicitly religious violations: burning incense to Baal and following other gods “you have not known.” The effect is to show that the problem is not one narrow category of sin; it is a comprehensive contradiction. Worship behavior in the temple is being paired with actions that damage community life and deny exclusive loyalty to Yahweh.

Question 3

In v.10, what sequence of actions does Jeremiah highlight, and why is it shocking within the logic of the passage?

Accepted Answer

Jeremiah highlights a sequence: (1) they do the listed wrongs (v.9), then (2) they “come and stand” before Yahweh in the temple (“this house…called by my name”), and (3) they say, “We are delivered,” as if that resolves the matter. The shock comes from the implied conclusion: they treat temple access and a confident declaration as permission “that you may do all these abominations.” The passage presents this as a misuse of worship—turning it into a shield for continuing what God condemns.

Question 4

What does the repeated phrase “this house, which is called by my name” contribute to the argument in vv.10–11?

Accepted Answer

The repetition ties the accusation directly to the temple’s identity. Calling it “this house…called by my name” stresses that the building is associated with Yahweh’s reputation and presence, not merely a national monument. That makes the people’s behavior in v.10 more offensive: they stand in a place publicly marked as Yahweh’s and claim “deliverance” while continuing abominations. In v.11, the same phrase intensifies the rhetorical question: has the very house bearing Yahweh’s name become, in their view, a safe hideout for wrongdoing?

Question 5

In v.11, what does the image “den of robbers” imply about how the people are treating the temple?

Accepted Answer

A “den” is a place of retreat, not usually the place where crimes are committed but where criminals feel protected afterward. Calling the temple a “den of robbers” implies they view it as a refuge that shields them from exposure or consequences. Even if “robbers” is read broadly as wrongdoers, the point stays the same: they use sacred space to create false safety. This fits v.10’s logic—do wrong, then enter the temple and claim “We are delivered”—and v.11’s conclusion that Yahweh is not fooled.

Question 6

What role does Yahweh’s statement “I…have seen it” play at the end of v.11?

Accepted Answer

The closing line functions as a decisive verdict on the whole pattern described in vv.8–11. The people may think temple presence and religious words can cover their behavior, but Yahweh claims direct knowledge: “I…have seen it.” That undermines the attempted concealment implied by “den of robbers.” It also reinforces v.8’s claim that their trusted words cannot “profit”—because the situation is not misunderstood or hidden. The passage ends with divine witness, not human self-justification, as the controlling reality.
