Why the disagreement exists The disagreements come from the passage’s metaphors and rhetorical questions. “Refining” can suggest either destruction or cleansing depending on how one imagines the outcome, and the text does not describe the result here. Likewise, family language (“daughter,” “my people”) can carry both affection and accusation in prophetic speech. Finally, “nation” can be heard either as a specific historical reference or as a representative example.
