Darkness, fire, and the emptiness he trusted Eliphaz says the person will not escape “darkness,” and that a flame will dry up his branches; even “the breath of God’s mouth” drives him off. He then cautions: do not trust what is empty and self-deceptive, because that same emptiness will be the only “reward” returned.

Some readers take the language of “the breath of God’s mouth” and “fire” as pointing to direct divine intervention in judgment. Others read these as poetic ways of saying that disaster comes with unstoppable force—without specifying the mechanism beyond God’s rule over life.
Another difference concerns “before his time.” Some understand it mainly as early death. Others take it more broadly as an early collapse of one’s plans, influence, or family line (supported by the fruit/flower imagery and “barren company”).
The passage is densely metaphorical: darkness, flame, breath, branches, vines, olives, barrenness, conception and birth. Because these images overlap, the text can indicate a real-life outcome (death, ruin, loss of household stability) without pinning down one single form it must take in every case.
Explicitly, the text claims that trusting futility is self-deception and that futility is the “reward” (v. 31). It also claims that the godless person does not escape “darkness,” that his “branch” withers and fails to stay green, and that loss comes before maturity—like unripe grapes shaken off and olive blossoms dropped (vv. 30, 32–33).
