A plea that the wrong not be buried Job speaks as though his life has been taken by violence or at least treated like a violent wrong. He begs the earth not to “cover” his blood—meaning, do not hide the evidence or let the matter disappear. He also asks that his “cry” find no resting place, as if he wants the complaint to stay active and heard.
A witness above, tears below Job claims that even now he has a “witness” in heaven and someone “on high” who can vouch for him. At the same time, he says his friends mock him, so the people near him are not safe judges. With nowhere else to turn, his eyes pour out tears to God, showing both desperation and continued direct address to God.
The desired outcome and the shrinking time Job yearns for someone to argue the case of a man “with God,” and also for a “son of man” in relation to his neighbor—language that keeps the dispute both vertical (before God) and horizontal (in the human community). He ends by reminding that only a few years remain before he goes on a one-way path, implying death is near and so vindication cannot be postponed indefinitely.
Literary Context
These lines sit inside Job’s long reply to Eliphaz. Job has been describing how battered and publicly shamed he feels, and how he thinks God has allowed it. Here he shifts from describing pain to pressing for vindication: he wants his suffering and “blood” to remain on record rather than being covered over and forgotten. The appeal to a heavenly witness develops the tension of the dialogue—his friends claim his trouble proves wrongdoing, while Job insists the true accounting must be made beyond their accusations. The closing note about “a few years” keeps the speech urgent and time-limited.
Historical Context
Job is portrayed in an early, clan-based world where reputation, public speech, and communal judgment carry great weight. When someone dies unjustly, the land and community memory can be invoked as if they “remember” what happened; Job draws on that kind of imagery as he demands that his story not be buried. The picture also assumes that God is above human courts and that an appeal can be made “on high” when local voices fail. In a setting without centralized institutions described in the story, family and friends act as the main public interpreters of suffering, which intensifies Job’s need for a higher witness.

Job speaks like someone whose life has been treated as a violent wrong. He calls on the “earth” not to cover his “blood” and not to let his “cry” settle into silence (v.18). The point is that the case should not be buried or forgotten.
Job also insists that the final word about him cannot rest with his friends. They mock him (v.20), but he claims he has a trustworthy witness “in heaven” and “on high” (v.19). Even while feeling isolated, he still addresses God directly, pouring out tears to God rather than turning to his friends (v.20).
He wants his case argued properly—both before God and in relation to people (“his neighbor”)—and he feels time is running out because death is near and irreversible (vv.21–22).
Who is the “witness in heaven”? Some read the witness as God himself: Job is appealing over the heads of human accusers to the only judge who truly knows. Others read the witness as another heavenly figure who can speak on Job’s behalf before God.
What does “blood” mean here? Some take “blood” as mainly metaphorical language for innocent suffering and a ruined life, described as if it were wrongful killing. Others hear an even stronger claim: Job is portraying his suffering as equivalent to being violently wronged, so that his death (if it comes) would be like an unjust death that cries out for accounting.
What exactly is Job asking for in v.21? Some read v.21 as Job longing for someone to press his case with God against God (as if God is the problem). Others read it as Job longing for someone to represent him to God, because God is the only place where true vindication can happen.
Why the disagreement exists The poetry uses courtroom-like imagery (“witness,” “vouching,” “maintain the right”) without spelling out the identity of the witness or advocate. Also, Job’s speech elsewhere holds together two strong feelings at once: God is the one he weeps to, and yet God is also the one he feels has allowed his harm. That mix makes it hard to tell whether Job is envisioning God as his defender, his opponent, or (in different senses) both.
What this passage clearly contributes This section contributes a strong protest that suffering is not automatically proof of guilt. Job refuses to let local opinion (his friends’ scorn) close the case. Explicitly, he claims a higher witness exists (v.19) and he keeps his complaint directed to God (v.20). By inference, the passage supports the idea that ultimate truth and vindication may require a perspective beyond human observers, especially when community judgment fails.
