Speech and silence both fail to reduce pain Job tests two opposite responses to suffering: speaking and holding back. If he speaks, his “grief” does not go down; if he restrains himself, he still is not eased. The point is not that speech is wrong, but that neither expression nor restraint has produced real relief.

Literary Context
These lines sit inside Job’s long reply to Eliphaz (Job 16–17), where Job pushes back against his friends’ moralizing explanations and describes what his suffering feels like from the inside. Just before this, Job says he could easily speak like his friends if their roles were reversed, but he would choose to strengthen rather than wound (Job 16:4–5). Verses 6–7 continue that contrast: even Job’s best attempt at speech does not help his own condition, and the focus shifts from the friends’ harsh talk to Job’s accusation that God has brought him to collapse and loneliness.
Historical Context
Job is portrayed in an early, clan-based setting where a household’s well-being depends heavily on health, family, servants, and a protective network of kin and allies. In that world, public honor and communal support are closely tied, so suffering is not only physical but also social: a ruined person can become isolated, suspected, or avoided. Lament speech was a known way to voice distress and seek hearing, yet it did not guarantee change. Job 16:6–7 reflects this lived reality: pain that cannot be talked away, and a life so depleted that one’s “company” or circle has effectively disappeared.
Theological Significance
Job 16:6–7 presents suffering that is not solved by technique or mood. Job tries two opposite responses—speaking and holding back—and reports the same outcome: his grief does not decrease and he is not relieved. Some readers take Job’s words mainly as a complaint against God (a strong accusation that God is acting as the direct cause of his ruin). Others hear it mainly as lament (raw speech to God from within pain) that can include accusation-like language without claiming to fully understand God’s purposes.
There is also a smaller question about what exactly has become “desolate”: Job’s household (family and dependents), his friends and supporters, or his wider community network. Each option keeps the basic point: Job feels emptied of human support.
The lines are short and poetic, and they compress emotion and meaning. The shift to direct address (“But now, God…”) can sound like a courtroom-style charge or like the honest bluntness of prayer. Likewise, “company” can refer to a household circle or a broader social circle, and the text does not specify which.
Explicitly, Job claims (1) speech does not make his grief subside, (2) silence does not ease him, (3) both options feel equally ineffective, (4) God has worn him out, and (5) his social world is desolated (Job links inner misery with communal collapse). Theologically by inference, the passage gives voice to the reality that sufferers may experience God’s hand as heavy and may find neither self-expression nor self-control brings immediate relief.
