Life and strength exhausted Job says his “spirit” is consumed, picturing his life-energy as spent. He adds that his days are “extinct,” meaning he sees his remaining time as effectively ended. The statement “the grave is ready for me” presents death as not merely possible but waiting, as though prepared in advance.
Mockery close at hand Job insists that mockers are “with” him—present in his immediate circle rather than far away. He describes their behavior as provoking and irritating, and says his eye “dwells” on it, meaning he cannot escape the sight and impact of their harassment.
The combined force of dying and being scorned The two verses reinforce each other: Job’s sense of imminent death is paired with the ongoing sting of ridicule. His suffering is portrayed as both physical/temporal (life running out) and relational/social (companions turning into mockers).
Literary Context
These lines come in the middle of Job’s long reply within the back-and-forth speeches between Job and his companions. Just before this, Job has described physical and social collapse and complained that God has handed him over to hostility and made him a public spectacle (Job 16:7–11). Job 17 continues that lament by tightening the focus: he is not only suffering; he is nearing death and is also being treated with contempt by those near him. The logic moves from his failing life to the painful presence of mockers.
Historical Context
Job is set in an early, clan-based world where household heads are wealthy in livestock and social life is shaped by honor, counsel, and public reputation. Sickness and calamity are not only private pain; they are interpreted by observers, and a sufferer may become an object lesson. In such a setting, companions are expected to comfort, advise, and defend someone’s standing. Job’s complaint assumes that this is not happening: those who should be close enough to support him are instead near enough to deride him, intensifying his isolation as he approaches death.

Job is describing a life that feels used up and nearly finished. He speaks as if death is not just possible but already waiting (“the grave is ready”). That is a claim about his felt situation and outlook, not a calm report.
Job also says he is not suffering alone. “Mockers” are with him—close enough to be part of his immediate experience. Their behavior is ongoing, and he cannot get away from it (“my eye dwells on their provocation”).
Some readers take Job’s “spirit/breath is consumed” mainly as a physical description (his breathing, disease, and bodily decline). Others take it mainly as his inner vitality and emotional life collapsing.
Some also read “my days are extinct” and “the grave is ready” as literal certainty that he is about to die. Others hear it as poetic overstatement: Job feels death is near because suffering has made life seem effectively over.
The Hebrew wording can point to either “breath” or “inner life,” and Job’s speeches regularly use intense poetic language. The context supports both dimensions: real bodily ruin and overwhelming despair.
These verses add a key element to Job’s complaint: suffering is both mortal (life running out) and social (being scorned by those nearby). The text presents mockery as part of the pain, not a side issue. It also shows Job’s inner attention is trapped by it—he remains under constant provocation as he faces the grave Job 17:1–2.
