Yahweh again points to Job’s integrity and notes that Job held fast even after intense loss. Satan responds by reframing the test: Job’s earlier endurance is explained away as self-interest because Job’s own body was still untouched. The dialogue moves the story from external losses to personal suffering, while keeping the reader aware that limits are being set on what Satan may do.
Historical Context
Job is portrayed in a setting that resembles the ancient patriarchal world: wealth measured in livestock, family leadership in worship, and social life organized around households rather than national institutions. The scene of a divine council reflects an ancient Near Eastern way of picturing ultimate governance as a court-like assembly where reports are made and challenges raised. The language of “hand” and “touch” fits everyday speech for control and direct impact. The narrative’s concern is not local politics but the social realities of honor, endurance, and bodily survival in a world without modern medicine.
Theological Significance
Job 2:4–6 presents a second round of testing that moves from loss of possessions and family (chapter 1) to direct bodily suffering. Satan argues that Job’s earlier endurance can be explained by self-preservation: people will sacrifice “all that a man has” to save his own .

The text also clearly shows limits. Satan cannot simply harm Job at will; he asks for permission. Yahweh grants real permission (“he is in your hand”) while also setting a real boundary: Job must not be killed.
“Skin for skin.” The phrase sounds like a proverb, but its exact point is unclear. Some take it to mean people trade one “layer” of loss to protect themselves (Job lost things around him, but his own skin was safe). Others hear a more pointed claim: a person will hand over another’s “skin” (others’ lives or goods) to save his own. The main idea in either case is the same in context: Satan reframes Job’s integrity as self-interest.
What “renounce you to your face” means. Some read this as Job openly cursing God; others read it more broadly as public rejection or disowning. Either way, it is not about a private doubt but an explicit, direct repudiation.
How much freedom “in your hand” gives Satan. The verse grants real agency to Satan in the test, but the limit (“only spare his life”) means the agency is not unlimited. Readers differ on how tightly God controls the details beyond this stated boundary.
The disagreements come from brief, proverb-like wording (“skin for skin”), from a verb that can be heard as “curse” or “reject,” and from the narrative’s deliberate tension: Satan acts, yet only within permission and limits.
It adds a sharper version of Satan’s accusation: the deepest motivation is self-preservation, so a test must touch the body (“bone and flesh”) to be decisive. It also strengthens the book’s framework of bounded suffering: severe affliction is permitted, but not death, and the test is presented as occurring under divine permission rather than outside it.
