God is not the one receiving instruction Job asks a sharp question: can any human really teach God “knowledge,” when God is the one who judges those who are “high”? The point is not that humans learn nothing, but that God’s governance is not controlled by human explanations.
One person dies at ease and well-nourished Job describes a death that comes while someone is still “in full strength,” calm, and comfortable. The images of “pails full of milk” and “marrow… moistened” underline vigor, rich provision, and bodily well-being right up to the end.
Another person dies with a bitter life and little joy By contrast, Job describes someone who dies “in bitterness of soul,” having “never” tasted what is good. This person’s life is marked by inner anguish and lack of enjoyment, not ease.
Literary Context
These lines belong to Job’s reply in chapter 21, where he challenges the simple claim that the wicked always suffer and the upright always prosper. Just before this unit, Job has described how some people live long, secure lives despite wrongdoing, and he questions why their situation often remains undisturbed. Here he tightens the argument by focusing on death: even if two lives look morally or emotionally opposite, their final destination looks identical. The unit sets up Job’s broader insistence that observation does not match his friends’ neat moral math.
Historical Context
Job is framed like an ancient wisdom debate, set in a world of family-based wealth, honor, and social rank, where “high” people could mean rulers, nobles, or the socially powerful. Death imagery like returning to “dust” reflects common ancient Near Eastern ways of speaking about human mortality and burial. The picture of bodily plenty (“milk,” “marrow”) uses everyday, pastoral imagery to communicate health and abundance. In such a setting, people often expected life outcomes to reflect moral order; Job’s speech draws on shared experience to question that expectation.
Theological Significance
Job is arguing inside a wisdom debate about how God runs the world. In these verses he rejects the idea that humans can confidently “teach” God the right explanation for outcomes (v. 22). The logic is that God is the judge, even over those who are “high,” so God is not accountable to human systems of reward and punishment.

Job then places two deaths side by side. One person dies strong, comfortable, and well-provided for (vv. 23–24). Another dies with deep inner bitterness and without having enjoyed “good” (v. 25). Yet both end the same way: in the dust, covered by worms (v. 26). The passage’s clear emphasis is that death levels very different life stories.
A main question is what “those who are high” refers to (v. 22). Some read it as powerful humans (leaders, nobles, socially elevated people). Others think it could be a broader category that includes non-human heavenly beings. Either way, the point in context is God’s unmatched authority as judge.
Another question is how to take the language about “never” tasting good (v. 25). Some take it as absolute (a life with virtually no enjoyment). Others see it as rhetorical emphasis for a life marked by misery, not a mathematical claim that no good moment ever occurred.
The Hebrew wording and poetry are compact and evocative. “High” is a flexible term, and poetry often compresses meaning without spelling out referents. Likewise, “never” can function as a strict statement or as a forceful way of summarizing a dominant experience. The imagery of milk and marrow is also poetic, which invites different levels of literalness.
Explicitly, the text claims (1) God judges the “high,” so humans are not in a position to instruct God (v. 22), and (2) people with very different life experiences can reach the same physical end in death (vv. 23–26). Theological inference: Job is pressing against a simple one-to-one equation between visible life circumstances and moral standing, because the observable world includes both ease and bitterness ending in the same grave. The passage contributes a sober, leveling view of mortality that supports Job’s broader case that human explanations for suffering are often overconfident.
