God’s height illustrated by the stars Eliphaz begins with questions meant to force agreement: God is “in the heights of heaven,” and the stars are extremely high. The point is not astronomy but distance and elevation; he piles up “high” language to set God above ordinary human reach and perspective.
The alleged claim—God can’t really know or judge Eliphaz then says Job speaks as if God’s knowledge is limited: “What does God know?” and “Can he judge through the thick darkness?” The logic is that if God is far above and the darkness is between, then God’s insight and judgment would be impaired.
Clouds as a barrier and God pacing above Eliphaz expands the image: thick clouds function like a cover so God does not see. God is pictured as “walking” along the sky’s vault, moving at the upper boundary rather than looking closely into human affairs. The combined images paint God as removed, with clouds and darkness keeping human life out of view.
Literary Context
These verses sit inside Eliphaz’s third speech (Job 22), where he stops arguing gently and speaks in accusations. Just before this section, Eliphaz claims Job’s wrongdoing must be great, then lists alleged social harms and neglect (22:5–11). In 22:12–14, he turns from those alleged actions to the mindset he thinks drives them: a view of God as far away and unable to see clearly. Immediately after, he continues by warning that such thinking resembles older patterns of destructive behavior and invites disaster (22:15–20).
Historical Context
Job is framed as an ancient wisdom dialogue set in a patriarch-like world where family leadership, livestock wealth, and local social obligations matter deeply. The speech assumes a common ancient outlook that the sky is layered and extremely high, with clouds and “thick darkness” marking the boundary between the human world and the divine realm. Eliphaz uses shared observations—stars’ height, clouds’ cover—to build a rhetorical case about divine awareness and judgment. The argument reflects a society where moral order is expected to be upheld by an all-seeing Judge.
Theological Significance
Eliphaz is not describing God directly so much as accusing Job of holding a certain view of God. The shared point is that Eliphaz frames Job as thinking God is far away: God is “in the heights of heaven,” with the stars as the picture of extreme distance (explicit). From that, Eliphaz attributes to Job the idea that darkness and clouds block God’s knowing, seeing (), and judging (explicit).

Others read the lines as a hostile paraphrase or exaggeration: Eliphaz is putting words in Job’s mouth to make Job sound like someone who denies God’s awareness, even if Job’s actual speeches are more complex and often assume God does see (inference; the text itself signals accusation but doesn’t prove accuracy).
The speech uses quotation-like claims (“You say…”) without showing Job saying these exact words. That raises a natural question: is Eliphaz summarizing Job’s position, or reshaping it for rhetorical force? The highly pictorial language—darkness, cloud-cover, God “walking on the vault of the sky”—can also be heard either as a serious theological diagnosis or as mocking caricature.
It shows one way Job’s friends explain moral disorder: wrongdoing happens because people think God is distant and cannot judge. Eliphaz ties divine transcendence (God’s height) to an accusation of divine inaccessibility (clouds and darkness as barriers) and concludes that Job’s supposed view undermines confidence in God’s oversight (explicit claims about what Eliphaz says Job “says,” plus the explicit barrier imagery).
