These lines come within Job’s extended reply in the dialogue section, where he resists his friends’ confident claims that life reliably shows moral payback. In this part of his speech, Job is not mainly defending his own innocence; he is widening the lens to public life and asking why obvious wrongdoing can remain uncorrected. The opening questions set the agenda, and the following snapshots supply evidence from everyday community realities. The logic is: if God governs, why is justice not more visibly timed, and why do the vulnerable suffer openly?

The pictures Job draws fit an agrarian, village-based world where wealth is measured in land and livestock and where survival often depends on access to fields, roads, and working animals. Moving “landmarks” describes quietly stealing land by shifting boundary stones, a form of theft that could be hard to prove. Seizing a widow’s ox or taking property as a “pledge” reflects debt pressure and informal enforcement that could easily become predatory. With weak institutional protection for the powerless, the poor can be driven into hiding and off public routes, making injustice both practical and visible.

Job’s opening question assumes God is not unaware of human events, yet Job cannot see set, public “times” when God visibly steps in to correct wrongdoing (v.1). The complaint is not that injustice is rare, but that it is openly happening to the vulnerable: land is quietly stolen by moving boundary stones, flocks are taken by force, and a widow and orphan lose essential work animals through coercion and debt pressure (vv.2–3). The social effect is displacement and fear: the needy are pushed off the road and the poor hide (v.4).
