God’s power sustains the strong, even amid insecurity Job says God can “preserve the mighty” by divine power, keeping strong people standing. He adds that God “rises up” someone who has no assurance of life, suggesting that life-and-death security is not something humans control, even for those who seem dominant.

Earlier in the chapter Job lists many wrongs that go unpunished in public view, raising the question of why God’s timing seems hidden. Verses 22–25 function as Job’s concluding snapshot: he acknowledges that God is involved, but not in the predictable way his friends insist on. The close ends with a direct challenge, pressing the debate toward evidence rather than slogans.
Historical Context
The book presents a world that fits an early, clan-based setting: wealth is measured in herds, social authority rests in household heads, and law-and-court structures are local rather than centralized. In that kind of society, “mighty” people can dominate resources and people with limited accountability, and sudden reversals—disease, raids, or shifting alliances—can end a powerful life quickly. The language of being “cut off” like harvested grain reflects agricultural rhythms familiar in the ancient Near East, used here to picture how quickly status can vanish.
Theological Significance
Job’s closing lines in this chapter describe a pattern Job has observed: God’s power can keep “the mighty” going, even when their hold on is not secure (v.22). God may even grant them a kind of settled “security” (v.23a). At the same time, God is not portrayed as unaware; his eyes are on their —their lived conduct (v.23b). Yet the stability does not last. Their “exaltation” is brief; they are brought down and removed like everyone else, pictured like grain cut at harvest (v.24). Job ends by challenging anyone to show his account is false (v.25).

What kind of “removal” is in view? Some understand v.24 mainly as ordinary mortality and the fragility of status: even the exalted die and disappear. Others think Job implies a more pointed divine ending—God eventually cuts them down, even if the timing is not immediate.
How to hear “God gives them security” (v.23): Some read it as a real, if temporary, divine granting of stability. Others hear an ironic edge: a false sense of safety that precedes collapse, while God continues to watch.
Why the disagreement exists The language is compressed and observational rather than explanatory. Job affirms God’s involvement (“God preserves…,” “God gives…,” “his eyes are on…”) but does not spell out why God acts this way or whether the final downfall is direct judgment or simply the common end of human life. The broader chapter emphasizes wrongs that go unpunished in public view, which pushes some readers toward “these are wicked powerful people,” but the immediate wording can also be read more generally.
