These lines sit inside Job’s long response after repeated speeches from his friends. Job has been defending his integrity and rejecting their tight connection between suffering and guilt. In chapter 27 he shifts into an instructional tone: he is not only answering them but also presenting what he sees as a truer account of how God’s power and human outcomes relate. Verses 11–12 function as a bridge: Job announces his intent to teach and frames his coming claims as open, not secret. He also accuses his friends of speaking emptily despite shared observation.

Job is set in an early, clan-based world where household heads could act as religious representatives for their families and where social standing was often described in livestock and servants. Wisdom teaching commonly happened through speeches that appealed to shared experience (“you have seen it”) and to widely held beliefs about the divine ordering of life. The “hand” of a deity was a familiar way to talk about real-world power at work in events, not just abstract ideas. In such settings, public speech aimed to preserve honor, expose weak arguments, and assert credibility through confident instruction.

Shared ground

Job shifts into a teacher’s voice. He claims he will explain “the hand of God,” meaning God’s active power and ways of acting in the world (explicit claim). He also insists he will not keep back what he knows “with the Almighty” (explicit claim). The point is openness: Job presents himself as speaking plainly rather than guarding secret information (inference from his wording).
