Wealth ends overnight The subject lies down “rich,” but that last comfortable rest does not repeat. When he opens his eyes, he is simply not there—his life or presence has ended. The next line explains the feel of it: terrors come like rising waters, and a storm seizes him during the night.
Driven out by irresistible force An “east wind” lifts him and carries him away. The point is not travel but removal: he departs because he is swept out of his place, as if the wind itself evicts him.
No mercy while he flees The force pursuing him “hurls” itself at him and does not hold back. The person tries to escape “from his hand,” picturing the storm/wind as a personal power chasing him.
Literary Context
These verses sit near the end of Job’s long reply within the debate section of the book, where Job answers his friends’ accusations and argues about what can and cannot be inferred from suffering. In chapter 27 Job insists he will not admit guilt he does not believe is his, yet he also speaks about the typical “portion” of the wicked. Verses 19–23 form the closing image-sequence of that description: not slow decline, but sudden removal, portrayed through water, storm, and wind, and capped by public scorn.
Historical Context
Job’s speeches reflect an ancient Near Eastern world where wealth and security were fragile, tied to households, land, servants, and reputation. Night-time danger, storms, and destructive winds were common symbols for forces that can ruin a person quickly and beyond their control. Social standing also depended on public perception, so being “driven from one’s place” and mocked by others signaled loss of honor and belonging, not only loss of property. The imagery fits a setting where nature and community judgment both shaped lived experience.
Theological Significance
These lines present a vivid picture of how fragile wealth and “settled” life can be. The person is described as rich and apparently secure at bedtime, yet by morning he is gone (vv. 19–20). The removal is sudden, frightening, and unstoppable, pictured as floodwaters, a nighttime storm, and an overpowering wind (vv. 20–22).

The passage also adds a social dimension: after the collapse, observers respond with scorn—clapping and hissing as the person is driven out of “his place” (v. 23). Whether those onlookers are neighbors, enemies, or simply the crowd, the effect is public shame piled on top of loss.
Does “he is not” mean death, or something like disappearance/ruin? Some read v. 20 as straightforward death: he lies down rich, but will not “lie down” again; he opens his eyes, and he is no longer among the living. Others think the point is not his literal death but the vanishing of his former life—his security, status, and place in the community are gone.
Is the “east wind” literal weather or a metaphor for calamity? Some take the storm imagery as describing real disaster (violent wind and tempest). Others see the language as a poetic way of describing any overwhelming calamity that “carries” a person out of stability.
Who is the “hand” he flees from (v. 22)? The simplest reading is that the storm/wind is pictured as a pursuing power with a “hand.” Another possibility is that the “hand” points beyond the storm to the unseen force behind judgment, with the weather serving as the image.
The poetry blends physical imagery (waters, tempest, east wind) with personal language (a pursuing “hand”) and social consequences (“his place”). Because the passage compresses events into images, it leaves open whether the focus is the moment of death, the experience of catastrophic ruin, or both.
