Human effort pushes back the limits of darkness Humans “set an end to darkness” by bringing light and access into places that are naturally hidden. They search as far as possible for stones buried in deep gloom. The emphasis is on thoroughness and distance—pursuing what is concealed until the furthest reachable boundary.
Remote shafts and perilous movement underground The poem pictures a shaft opened away from where people normally live. Down there, miners are out of sight—“forgotten by the foot,” meaning passersby above do not notice them. They hang and swing far from other people, suggesting ropes, narrow spaces, and risky work.

This opening prepares for the chapter’s later contrast between what humans can uncover in the ground and what remains beyond human discovery in the realm of true wisdom, a point developed as the poem moves forward.
Historical Context
The passage assumes a world where mining and metalworking are familiar enough to serve as everyday imagery: digging shafts, extracting ore, and smelting metal. Such activities were known across the ancient Near East, where communities sought precious metals and stones for tools, weapons, trade, ornament, and status. The description also fits preindustrial labor realities: dangerous underground work, darkness, isolation from settlements, and the use of fire and refining processes to separate metal from rock. The poet leverages these recognizable practices to make a point about human reach and ingenuity.
Theological Significance
Job 28:1–6 presents mining and metalwork as clear examples of human skill. The text explicitly says people know where valuable materials are found and how to process them: silver has a mine, gold has a refining place, iron is taken from the ground, and copper is produced from ore (vv.1–2).

But underneath, it is “turned up” as if by fire, describing disruptive, intense extraction. From its rocks come precious stones like sapphires, and within it is fine gold dust—hidden wealth embedded in what looks like common ground.
It also explicitly stresses the intensity and reach of this work. Humans push into “darkness,” searching to the furthest limit for stones hidden in deep gloom (v.3). They cut shafts in remote places, out of sight from ordinary foot traffic above, and the miners hang and swing in risky underground spaces (v.4).
Finally, the passage holds two truths together about the same earth: it produces everyday food above, yet it is violently disturbed below to uncover rare beauty and wealth—precious stones and gold dust (vv.5–6). The point is descriptive: human labor can uncover what is buried.
Some differences arise over what the imagery is emphasizing.
One question is whether “man sets an end to darkness” (v.3) is mainly about literal light brought underground (lamps/torches), or a broader statement about human mastery over what is hidden and inaccessible.
Another question is what “underneath it is turned up as it were by fire” (v.5) pictures. Some read it as the upheaval and scorching involved in mining itself; others think it gestures toward the refining process (heat and fire) that makes the ore valuable.
A smaller uncertainty is what “sapphires” (v.6) refers to in ancient usage—either the modern gemstone or a broader category of blue precious stone.
Why the disagreement exists The passage is poetry, and poetry compresses meaning.
