The question that changes the topic After focusing on what humans can uncover in the earth, the speaker asks two parallel questions: “Where shall wisdom be found?” and “Where is the place of understanding?” The repetition pushes the reader to think of wisdom as something people want to locate, like a hidden deposit, but the question also hints that such a “place” is not obvious.
Human limits in locating and valuing wisdom The poem states that humans do not know wisdom’s “price,” and it is not found “in the land of the living.” Wisdom is treated as beyond normal human experience and beyond ordinary evaluation. Even if people can put a market value on metals, wisdom does not submit to that kind of measuring.
The widest search still comes up empty Two great realms are asked to testify: “the deep” and “the sea.” Each replies that wisdom is not there. The effect is to shut down the idea that wisdom might be discovered by going farther, deeper, or into the most mysterious parts of the world; even those places cannot claim to contain it.
Literary Context
Job 28 functions as a reflective poem set within the larger dialogue section of Job. It follows an extended portrayal of human mining skill (28:1–11), where people penetrate darkness and search out ore. Verse 12 turns that achievement into a contrast: even if humans can find precious metals, they still cannot “find” wisdom in the same way. Verses 13–14 continue the negative search by expanding the scope—first to “the land of the living,” then to the deepest and broadest places imagined (“the deep” and “the sea”). The argument builds by closing off every obvious “location” for wisdom.
Historical Context
The passage assumes an ancient world where mining and long-distance trade were known, and where people measured value by what could be weighed, priced, and obtained. It also reflects common ancient Near Eastern ways of talking about the cosmos: human society (“the land of the living”) is one realm, while the waters below and the sea represent vast, unreachable, and mysterious spaces. By personifying these waters as if they can speak, the poem uses familiar poetic imagination to say that even the most remote regions humans fear or cannot master still do not contain wisdom as a recoverable resource.
Theological Significance
Job 28:12–14 turns from human success in mining to a different search: locating wisdom. The text’s explicit claim is negative—wisdom is not something humans can the way they find valuable ore, and it is not present within the normal sphere of human life (“the land of the living”). Even the most remote realms people imagine—the deep and the sea—deny having it.

The main questions are about what, exactly, is being denied.
Some read “Man doesn’t know its price” mainly as a statement about value: people cannot correctly appraise wisdom, because it does not fit ordinary economic categories.
Others read “price” more as access: people do not know what it would take to obtain wisdom, because there is no human route to acquire it.
A related difference concerns scope. Some take “the land of the living” as a broad way of saying “the human world/earthly life,” while others hear a stronger claim that wisdom is not discoverable anywhere within human experience at all, even if one searches widely.
The poem uses marketplace language (“price”) and location language (“found,” “place”), but it does not explain whether “price” is about evaluating wisdom or about acquiring it—or both. Likewise, “land of the living,” “deep,” and “sea” can be heard as literal places, or as poetic extremes meant to rule out every conceivable human search.
This unit establishes a boundary: wisdom is not a recoverable resource within ordinary human reach. No amount of skill, danger, distance, or depth can guarantee access to it. By shutting down “obvious locations” (human society, the deep, the sea), it prepares for the later claim in Job 28 that wisdom’s true source and availability must be explained from outside normal human discovery (a point developed beyond v.14). One clear contribution is the contrast between human mastery over parts of creation and human inability to master wisdom itself (cf. Job 28:1–11).
