In chapter 29 he remembers earlier days: community esteem, his presence at the city gate, and the benefits others received from his leadership. Verses 14–17 are a focused “catalog” within that memory, offering examples meant to support his claim that he lived responsibly and used power for good. This section prepares for later complaints about being mocked and abandoned.
Historical Context
The poem reflects an ancient setting where local justice and community leadership happened at the town gate and depended on respected elders or leading household heads. The language assumes a world with deep vulnerability: blindness and lameness could quickly lead to poverty, and people without family protection could be exploited. Legal disputes were often decided through personal hearings, witness testimony, and the willingness of a powerful person to investigate. The imagery of predators and prey fits both real threats and social violence, describing how the strong could “devour” the weak unless restrained by communal authority.
Theological Significance
Job 29:14–17 presents Job’s remembered public life as a leader who used influence to protect other people. The passage’s own images move from inward character (“righteousness” and “justice” worn like clothing) to concrete actions: helping people with disabilities, taking responsibility for the needy, investigating disputes, and stopping exploiters.

A third question is what “the cause of him who I didn’t know” (v.16) means. It may refer to a stranger or outsider who lacked social connections, or it may emphasize that Job did not rely on familiarity—he investigated a case even when the person (or the facts) were not already known to him.
Why the disagreement exists The passage uses dense poetry and public-leadership imagery rather than procedural detail. Words like “righteousness,” “justice,” and “father” can describe personal virtue, official duty, or both. And the predator language (“prey,” “teeth”) naturally invites different judgments about how much is figurative versus literal.
What this passage clearly contributes The text portrays justice as more than good intentions: it includes visibility (“clothed”), practical assistance for vulnerable people, attention to evidence, and protection from exploitation. It also frames justice as part of legitimate leadership identity (robe/diadem), not merely private kindness. Within Job’s argument, these claims support his insistence that his earlier life did not fit the accusation that suffering proves wrongdoing.
