Mighty, yet not contemptuous Elihu begins with “Behold” to direct attention to a basic claim: God is truly powerful, but that power does not lead him to look down on people. God’s might is paired with “strength of understanding,” meaning his power includes insight and wise discernment, not just raw ability.
Different outcomes for wicked and afflicted Elihu states a contrast in how God governs: God does not “preserve” the life of the wicked, meaning the wicked do not have a guaranteed, protected future. In contrast, God “gives” the afflicted their right—he acts so that the harmed or oppressed receive what is due to them.
Constant attention to the righteous, even to lasting honor Elihu says God does not “withdraw his eyes” from the righteous, portraying ongoing watchfulness and care. He then gives an example at the high end of social life: God places some “with kings on the throne” and establishes them, leading to their exaltation. Literary Context
These lines come from Elihu’s speech cycle (Job 32–37), where a younger speaker steps in after Job and the three friends reach a stalemate. Elihu tries to reframe the discussion: suffering may function as instruction and correction rather than simple payback. In chapter 36 he begins a sustained focus on God’s greatness and the ways God governs the world. Verses 5–7 introduce the theme that God’s power is joined to attentive judgment, setting up later statements about how God deals with the afflicted and how he uses hardship to draw people back.
Historical Context
Job is framed like an early, clan-based setting with wealth measured in herds and family-led offerings, but the book’s poetic debates reflect a mature wisdom tradition. The social world assumed here includes clear categories like “wicked,” “righteous,” “afflicted,” and “kings,” and it treats public status as something God can grant or remove. Justice is imagined not only as inner virtue but as having one’s “right” recognized in community life. Elihu’s claims fit an Ancient Near Eastern expectation that the highest deity both rules with strength and maintains order by defending the vulnerable and restraining the violent.
Theological Significance
Job 36:5–7 presents God as both very powerful and carefully fair. The explicit claims are paired: God is “mighty” and yet does not treat people with contempt (v.5). His power is described as joined to “understanding,” so his strength is not pictured as blind force.

Another difference is how broadly to take the outcomes described (vv.6–7). Some read them as general patterns in God’s governance (typical outcomes over time, with exceptions). Others read them more strongly, as a rule that God regularly brings clear, visible reversal—ending the security of the wicked and publicly vindicating the afflicted and righteous.
A final difference is how to read “forever” (v.7). Some take it as poetic language for lasting stability and long-term honor within this life. Others think it gestures beyond ordinary human timelines, toward enduring rule or a more ultimate permanence, even if the immediate image is earthly kingship.
The pressure points are built into the wording. “Preserve the life” can mean survival, protected security, or lasting success; “give the afflicted their right” can mean legal vindication or more general justice; and “withdraw his eyes” can picture protection, careful oversight, or scrutiny. Also, Elihu is speaking in a wisdom-debate setting, where speakers state principles forcefully, sometimes without spelling out exceptions.
This unit contributes a clear portrait of divine rule: God’s greatness is not detached from moral attentiveness. The text explicitly ties might to understanding (v.5) and connects God’s attention to concrete outcomes for the wicked, the afflicted, and the righteous (vv.6–7). It also frames social status (even kingship) as something God can establish and sustain, reinforcing that power and public honor are not ultimate; they fall within God’s watchful governance.
