Therefore humans should revere, and self-styled wisdom is checked Because God is unreachable in greatness and yet non-oppressive in justice, Elihu concludes that people should revere him (fear in the sense of awe and reverence). He then states that God does not “regard” those who are “wise of heart,” meaning those confident in their own inner insight; human self-assured wisdom is not what gains God’s attention.
Literary Context
These lines conclude Elihu’s last speech (Job 32–37), which has focused on God’s greatness shown in creation, especially weather and the storm. Just before this, Elihu describes thunder, clouds, and lightning as signs of a God whose ways exceed human explanation. The argument narrows from observing God’s works to drawing a final conclusion about God’s character and the right human posture. The closing “therefore” in v. 24 signals that reverence is the fitting response to what has been said about God’s unreachable greatness and just governance.
Historical Context
Job’s story is set in an early, clan-based world where households were economic units and community honor mattered. Wisdom was prized, often expressed through sayings that link careful observation of the world with practical moral conclusions. In that setting, speeches like Elihu’s would aim to correct a person’s public claims about fairness and order, not merely private emotions. Language about the “Almighty” reflects a shared way of speaking about the highest deity’s supremacy. The emphasis on reverence also fits a culture where proper respect for a superior was a basic social expectation.
Theological Significance
These closing lines present God as both beyond human reach and above human strength. The Almighty cannot be “reached,” meaning people cannot fully grasp, manage, or master God. At the same time, God’s power is not pictured as raw force. It is paired with “justice and great righteousness,” and Elihu insists that God does not use power to oppress.

The human response Elihu draws is not debate or confidence, but reverence (fear as awe). The last line adds a warning: God is not impressed by people who count themselves “wise of heart,” that is, secure in their own inner insight.
Two phrases raise real questions.
First, “We can’t reach the Almighty.” Some take this mainly as a limit on human knowledge: God’s ways exceed human understanding. Others hear a relational distance: God is not available to be summoned, leveraged, or put on trial by human standards.
Second, “In justice… he will not oppress.” Some read this as a straightforward claim about God’s moral governance: God never acts unjustly. Others read it as Elihu’s stated principle that may clash with how suffering feels from below, especially in the story of Job.

Readers weigh Elihu’s confident summary against both Job’s experience and the later divine speeches, so they differ on whether v. 23 is primarily about limits of understanding, limits of control, or both, and how directly v. 23 addresses the problem of suffering.
