Treasuries of snow and hail God asks Job whether he has entered the “treasuries” of snow or seen the “treasures” of hail. He then says hail is something God has “reserved” for times of trouble, including battle and war, picturing it as a stored resource that can be deployed.
Routes of lightning and wind God asks what way lightning is distributed and how the east wind is scattered across the earth. The focus is on direction and spread—how these forces reach places as though along routes Job neither sees nor controls.
Channels for storm and rain on empty land God asks who cut a channel for floodwater and a path for the thunderstorm, then describes the purpose: to make it rain even where no people live, on wilderness land. Literary Context
These verses are part of God’s first speech to Job from the storm (Job 38–39), which answers Job not with a direct explanation of his suffering but with a long tour of the world’s workings. The overall movement is a sequence of pointed questions that expose the gap between human perspective and the scope of creation’s management. Just before this unit, God has questioned Job about the earth’s foundations and the sea’s boundaries; after it, God continues with stars and more weather phenomena. The repeated “who” and “where” questions press Job to admit he does not run these systems.
Historical Context
Job reflects an ancient Near Eastern world where people depended on seasonal rain, feared hail and storm damage, and experienced drought and wilderness travel as real threats. Weather was a matter of survival for herding and farming societies, and war imagery would resonate in a setting of raids and armed conflict. The passage uses concrete, storeroom-and-path imagery familiar from daily life—treasuries, channels, routes—to speak about forces that no human can fully control. In that environment, portraying weather as ordered and “kept” underscores that it is not random from a human standpoint.

Another smaller difference is how to understand “reserved…for battle and war.” Some read it as a statement about unusual, targeted judgment-like events. Others read it more broadly: hail, including ordinary hailstorms, can become an instrument in times of crisis, without implying every hail event is tied to warfare.
The passage uses everyday, household language (“treasury,” “path,” “father,” “womb”) to speak about natural processes. Because the language is metaphor-heavy, readers differ on how literally to picture the “storehouses,” and how narrowly to connect hail to specific historical acts of conflict.
Explicitly, God claims ownership and authority over weather’s “storehouses,” timing, and distribution (snow/hail “reserved,” lightning “distributed,” wind “scattered,” storm “paths”). The passage also explicitly frames rain as serving non-human landscapes (wilderness) and describes water’s transformation into ice and a frozen “deep.”
By inference, the text supports a view of creation as governed by wisdom beyond human administration, and it challenges a purely human-centered account of nature’s purpose. It does not offer a mechanism for weather, but it does present weather as within God’s domain rather than Job’s (compare the larger run of questions in Job 38:1 and following).
