God asks who gave the warhorse its power and splendor God begins with two questions: did Job give the horse “might,” and did Job dress its neck with a shaking mane. The point is that the horse’s strength and striking appearance are gifts outside Job’s power. Then God asks if Job makes it leap like a locust—quick, springing motion—and describes the “glory” of its snorting as fearsome.
The horse’s eager posture and forward drive The scene moves to the valley where armies gather. The horse paws at the ground, acts glad in its strength, and goes out to meet armed men. Instead of being forced into danger, it appears to welcome the contest.
Fearlessness amid weapons and noise The horse “mocks” fear and does not panic; it does not turn back from the sword. Weapons rattle and flash around it: the quiver, spear, and javelin. The horse remains committed to forward movement even as threats multiply.
Literary Context
This unit sits inside God’s long reply to Job from the storm (Job 38–41), where God answers Job not by explaining his suffering directly but by pressing him with questions about the world Job did not make or manage. Job 39 moves through a gallery of animals, each showing instincts, timing, and capacities beyond human oversight. The warhorse section comes after the wild ox (39:9–12) and before the hawk and eagle (39:26–30), shifting from untamable strength to trained strength that still carries a fierce, almost independent spirit.
Historical Context
Warhorses were central to ancient Near Eastern warfare, valued for speed, noise, intimidation, and their ability to bear riders and face chaos. The imagery assumes familiarity with weapons like quiver, spear, and javelin, and with battlefield signaling by horn. Horses could be trained for combat, but their raw power and panic-resistance were never fully guaranteed, making them a vivid example of creaturely force that humans can employ but not ultimately create.
