Ordinary fishing and restraint fail God asks whether Job can pull Leviathan out with a fishhook or hold down its tongue with a cord. He then asks if Job can put a rope into its nose or pierce its jaw with a hook. The point is that standard methods for catching and controlling animals do not apply here.

How to take “covenant.” Some take the “covenant” language (Hebrew covenant) as playful personification: the point is that Leviathan cannot be domesticated or contractually controlled.
