God overturns the plans of the crafty

These verses fall within Eliphaz’s first speech (Job 4–5). After urging Job to accept correction, Eliphaz portrays how God commonly overturns self-serving stratagems and lifts those without power. The unit moves from frustrated plans (vv. 12–13), to confusion (v. 14), to rescue and hope for the needy (vv. 15–16).

Job’s world is presented as a clan-based Ancient Near Eastern society where influence often belonged to wealthy households and local strongmen rather than centralized institutions. Harm could come through force or through public speech in disputes, making “mouth” and “hand” vivid social images for intimidation and power.

Theological significance

He supports his claim by listing reversals where God blocks schemers, exposes their wisdom as useless, and gives the poor renewed hope. The crafty are prevented from completing their plans.
