Job names his request—God should end his life. Job opens with longing: he wishes his “request” would be granted. He immediately clarifies what he means—he wants God to “crush” him, to release his hand in decisive action, and to “cut” him off. The point is not subtle; Job is asking God to end his suffering by ending his life.
Death would still leave him one comfort—he has not renounced God’s words. Job says that even in ongoing pain that shows no restraint, he would still have a kind of consolation. He could “exult” (or take a grim confidence) in this: he has not denied the words of the Holy One. In other words, he wants relief, but he also wants it known that his suffering has not turned him into a person who rejects what God has said.
He argues that waiting is beyond his capacity. Job asks two questions: what strength does he have to keep waiting, and what future outcome could make patience reasonable? He then answers by comparison: he is not as durable as stone, and his body is not like bronze. The logic is simple—his limits are human limits, so demanding endless endurance makes no sense to him.
Literary Context
These lines come from Job’s first reply in the long debate section. After losing his children, health, and security, Job first breaks his silence with a lament (Job 3). Eliphaz then responds, urging him to accept discipline and to hope for restoration. In chapter 6 Job pushes back, saying his anguish explains his sharp words and that his friends have not helped him. Verses 8–13 are the emotional center of that pushback: instead of arguing a theory of suffering, Job asks for an end and explains why endurance and waiting feel unrealistic to him.
Historical Context
The book presents Job in an early, clan-based world where a household head offers sacrifices and measures wealth largely in livestock, a setting often linked with the patriarchal era (early second millennium BC). The speeches reflect an ancient wisdom style: intense poetic language, probing questions about human limits, and frank speech directed toward God. Socially, honor and integrity matter greatly, and public suffering invites interpretation by others. Job’s plea assumes that life and death are ultimately in God’s hand, and that a sufferer may bring raw, unfiltered requests into prayerful speech.
Theological Significance
Job 6:8–13 presents Job turning from arguing with friends to speaking directly about what he wants God to do. The explicit request is stark: he wants God to end his life (vv. 8–9). Job describes God’s “hand” as the decisive agent who could do this, which assumes God ultimately governs both life and death.

Job also frames his desire for death alongside a claim about integrity: even if the pain continues without relief, he says he has not denied “the words of the Holy One” (v. 10). The passage joins two realities that can coexist in the text: intense despair and a continued attachment to what God has said.
Finally, Job argues from human limitation. He is not stone or bronze; he lacks the strength to keep waiting, and he has no inner resources left (vv. 11–13). The speech treats endurance as something that can run out, not as an unlimited moral reservoir.
Job’s tone in v. 10 (“let me exult in pain”): Some read this as grim confidence—Job can still hold on to one “consolation,” namely that he has not rejected God’s words. Others hear bitter irony—“exult” is too strong a word for his state, so it underlines how extreme and unnatural his suffering has become.
“The words of the Holy One” (v. 10): Some take this as God’s commands and moral instruction, meaning Job insists he has not abandoned reverence and obedience. Others understand it more broadly as anything God has spoken—promises, truths about God, or prior teaching—so Job’s claim is that he has not renounced God’s reality even while he protests.
“Wisdom is driven quite from me” (v. 13): Some interpret this mainly as psychological collapse—Job cannot think clearly or find emotional stability. Others take it as the loss of practical guidance—he cannot see a path forward or make sense of what to do next.
Why the disagreement exists The poetry compresses ideas and uses strong images (“crush,” “cut me off,” “exult in pain”), which can carry more than one shade of meaning without changing the basic point. Also, phrases like “words of the Holy One” are not defined in the immediate context, so interpreters infer the likely reference from broader themes in Job about integrity, speech, and fearing God.
What this passage clearly contributes This section clearly contributes a theology of honest address to God under extreme suffering: Job asks God for death and names God as the only one able to end it (vv. 8–9). At the same time, Job explicitly links his remaining “consolation” to not having denied God’s words (v. 10), showing that protest and continued loyalty can appear together in the same speech. The passage also gives a realistic account of creaturely limits: Job rejects the idea that humans are built like stone or bronze and says he has no help within himself (vv. 11–13).
