Life is brief, and Job expects no more “good” Job asks God to “remember” that his life is only a breath—something insubstantial and quickly gone. On that basis he says his “eye” will no longer see good, meaning he expects his capacity to experience well-being or desirable life outcomes is ending.
Others will look for him, but he will be gone Job expands the thought from his own viewpoint to how he will appear to observers: the one who sees him now will soon not see him. He then addresses God directly—God’s eyes may look for Job, but Job will “not be,” stressing imminent absence from the world of the living.

Literary Context
These lines sit inside Job’s first long reply to Eliphaz (Job 6–7). Job has been protesting that his suffering is heavier than he can bear and that his words come from agony rather than stubbornness. In chapter 7 he shifts from addressing his friends to speaking directly to God, describing human life as harsh, short, and full of restless nights. Verses 7–10 form a focused “life-is-fleeting” appeal that supports his larger complaint: his pain feels final, and time is running out for relief or vindication in this life.
Historical Context
Job is set in an early, clan-based world where household identity, land, and one’s “place” in the community mattered deeply, and where death meant separation from family and daily life. Job’s reference to Sheol reflects a common ancient Near Eastern way of speaking about the realm of the dead as the destination of those who die, a place associated with silence and removal from ordinary human activity. The images he uses—breath, vanishing cloud, returning home no more—fit lament language found in ancient poetry, where physical decline and social disappearance are intertwined.
Theological Significance
Job speaks directly to God and asks him to “remember” how short Job’s life is. The core claim is that human life is like a breath—quick, fragile, and already slipping away (v.7). On that basis Job expects not to “see good” again, meaning he anticipates no further experience of well-being in this life (v.7). He also stresses how quickly a person disappears from other people’s sight (v.8).

Job then describes death as a one-way descent: like a cloud that dissolves, a person who goes down to Sheol does not “come up” again (v.9). He restates this in ordinary social terms: no return to one’s house, and even one’s “place” no longer “knows” him (v.10). The passage is about the finality of death with respect to everyday, earthly life and social presence.
Some readers take Job’s statements as broad claims about the afterlife itself—meaning Job believes there is no future existence at all. Others read them more narrowly: Job is describing what death looks like “from here,” emphasizing that the dead do not re-enter ordinary human life, without trying to settle the question of resurrection or life with God.
A smaller question is what Job means by “your eyes shall be on me” (v.8). It can be heard as hoped-for attention (“you will look and act before I’m gone”) or as painful scrutiny (“you keep watching me until I disappear”). The wording itself allows either emphasis.
Job uses absolute-sounding language (“no more,” “come up no more,” “return no more”) and the location word “Sheol,” which can be heard either as “the grave” in general or as the realm of the dead. Because Job is lamenting rather than teaching a full doctrine of the afterlife, interpreters differ on how far to press his lines beyond the immediate point: death ends participation in normal human life.
Explicitly, it gives Job’s reason for urgency: life is brief, and he expects his remaining time for “good” is nearly gone (vv.7–8). It also contributes a clear picture of death’s irreversibility regarding earthly routines and relationships: going down to Sheol means not coming back to home and recognized place in the community (vv.9–10). As an inference, it shows how Job’s suffering is experienced as time-sensitive and potentially final, which shapes the intensity of his address to God.
