Historical Context
Job is set in an ancient West Asian world where people commonly spoke of the earth as having “pillars” and of the sky as something spread out overhead. The constellations named (Bear, Orion, Pleiades) reflect shared night-sky knowledge used for seasons and navigation. Sea imagery often carried a sense of danger and untamable force, so portraying God as walking upon it conveys dominance over what humans fear.
