Question 1

In verse 4, what does the repeated pattern “what X left, Y ate” communicate about the situation?

Accepted Answer

The repetition stresses completeness and momentum. Each line assumes there was something “left,” but only temporarily, because the next wave arrives and finishes it. The effect is to remove any sense of recovery time or safe remainder. The verse is less interested in giving a scientific report and more interested in portraying an experience of relentless loss. It frames the damage as progressive and cumulative: whatever survives the first wave becomes the target of the next. That prepares for the later verses, where normal social routines (wine) and long-term crops (vine and fig tree) are said to be devastated.

Question 2

Why are “drunkards” and “drinkers of wine” singled out in verse 5?

Accepted Answer

They are singled out because the disaster is felt immediately in what they consume: “sweet wine” is “cut off” from their mouths. This is a concrete way to show how far the devastation reaches—beyond fields into daily pleasures and social life. The address also implies that some people may be numbed or distracted, needing to “wake up” to the reality of the crisis. The verse does not explain the whole community’s condition; it uses a recognizable group to represent how the plague disrupts normal life and forces public acknowledgment of loss.

Question 3

How do verses 6–7 shift from observation to interpretation of the disaster?

Accepted Answer

Verse 4 mainly reports what happens (wave after wave consuming what remains). Verses 6–7 interpret what it “means” by changing the imagery: the destroyer is described as a “nation” that has come against the land, “strong” and “without number,” with “lion” teeth. That turns a plague into an invasion-like event. Verse 7 then returns to concrete outcomes—vine ruined, fig tree stripped, bark thrown down, branches whitened—showing that the invasion language is grounded in visible agricultural wreckage, not just abstract rhetoric.

Question 4

What does calling the destroyer a “nation” in verse 6 add that “locusts” alone might not?

Accepted Answer

Calling it a “nation” adds the emotional and political weight of invasion: threat, helplessness, and public crisis. A “nation” implies organized force coming from outside and overwhelming local defenses. Even if the referent is still locusts, the label frames the plague as an enemy power rather than a random inconvenience. The additional descriptors—“strong” and “without number”—reinforce scale and inevitability, and the “lion” teeth imagery adds violent capability. Together, these choices make the disaster sound like an assault on the land’s stability and identity.

Question 5

What specific kinds of damage to the vine and fig tree are described in verse 7, and what do they imply?

Accepted Answer

The verse names multiple layers of harm. The vine is “laid waste,” and the fig tree is “stripped.” Then the description intensifies: the bark is stripped off and “thrown away,” leaving branches “white,” meaning exposed and bare. This is more than losing fruit for one season; it suggests damage to the plants themselves, threatening future productivity. The language points to lasting impact—economic and social—because vines and fig trees are long-term crops tied to stability, diet, and celebration. The vivid “white branches” image underlines how thoroughly the living surface has been removed.

Question 6

How do verses 5 and 7 connect the loss of wine with the broader agricultural collapse?

Accepted Answer

Verse 5 highlights immediate scarcity: sweet wine is gone, so those who rely on it for pleasure and social drinking feel the disaster directly. Verse 7 then explains why wine would disappear by naming damage to the vine itself. If the vine is ruined and stripped, there is no grape production feeding the wine supply. In other words, the cut-off wine is not just a distribution problem; it reflects the breakdown of the land’s productive capacity. The passage links personal experience (“from your mouth”) with the agricultural source (vine destruction) to show a chain from field to table.
