Historical Context
Joel assumes a Judahite community whose daily life and economy depended heavily on agriculture—especially vineyards and fig trees, which also shaped diet, trade, and celebration. A major locust outbreak, especially if repeated in stages, could remove leaves, bark, and fruit, threatening both immediate food and future harvests. The mention of wine highlights how crop loss reaches beyond subsistence into social routines and feasting. Describing the swarm as a “nation” reflects how ancient people often explained massive natural forces with the language of military invasion and public crisis.
