Question 1

Who is being addressed in Joel 3:4, and what does the opening question suggest about their standing before Yahweh?

Accepted Answer

The addressees are Tyre, Sidon, and “all the regions of Philistia,” nearby coastal powers positioned for Mediterranean trade. Yahweh’s question (“what are you to me?”) signals that they have no legitimate claim to act against him, and it frames the dispute as one where Yahweh is the offended party. The wording also implies Yahweh identifies himself with what was done to Judah. The verse functions like a direct challenge: before listing evidence, Yahweh disputes their right to act as though they can “repay” him at all.

Question 2

In verses 4 and 7, how is the idea of “repayment” described, and what outcome is promised?

Accepted Answer

The passage repeats the same core claim twice: if these nations attempt “repayment,” Yahweh will “swiftly and speedily” return that repayment “on your own head,” and then reiterates it in verse 7. The repeated phrasing makes the point feel settled and inevitable. “On your head” presents the outcome as personal and inescapable—the consequences land back on the ones who initiated the harm. The promised outcome is not vague punishment but a mirrored return: the action they aimed outward comes back to them.

Question 3

What specific actions are listed as the reasons for judgment in verses 5–6?

Accepted Answer

Two categories of wrongdoing are named. First is plunder: taking “my silver and my gold” and carrying Yahweh’s “finest treasures” into their temples, likely as trophies and prestige offerings. Second is human trafficking: selling “the children of Judah and the children of Jerusalem” to “the sons of the Greeks,” with the stated goal of removing them far from their border. The passage emphasizes both economic theft and the forced displacement of people, showing the harm is material, religiously insulting (temples), and deeply personal.

Question 4

What role do the Greeks play in verse 6, and what effect does the text highlight?

Accepted Answer

The Greeks appear as the distant buyers or end-market (“sons of the Greeks”), indicating that Judean captives were being moved into broader Mediterranean trade networks. The effect highlighted is separation: the sale was done “that you may remove them far from their border.” The point is not simply that a transaction occurred, but that it was designed to cut people off from home and community. The verse portrays distance as part of the violence—being sold far away intensifies the injury and makes recovery seem less likely.

Question 5

What does verse 7 claim Yahweh will do, and how does it connect to the earlier charges?

Accepted Answer

Yahweh says he will “stir them up” from the place where they were sold, implying active intervention that reverses the earlier forced movement. This directly answers the intent of verse 6 (“remove them far from their border”): Yahweh can reach into distant locations created by the slave trade and set a counter-movement in motion. Verse 7 also repeats the repayment principle, linking the rescue of the sold with the broader claim that the aggressors’ intended “repayment” will be returned onto themselves.

Question 6

How does verse 8 mirror verse 6, and what is the function of mentioning Sheba?

Accepted Answer

Verse 6 describes Judean children being sold to Greeks to push them far away; verse 8 describes the oppressors’ sons and daughters being sold into Judah’s hands, and then sold on to Sheba, described as a faraway nation. The structure intentionally mirrors the earlier crime: selling, children, and distance are all repeated, but reversed. Mentioning Sheba reinforces remoteness and the loss of control—just as Judah’s people were taken beyond easy reach, the coastal powers’ children are portrayed as sent beyond their own horizon.
