The Word’s presence “in the beginning” The passage starts at the earliest possible point (“in the beginning”) and says the Word already “was.” It then places the Word “with God,” suggesting relationship or shared presence. It also says “the Word was God,” identifying the Word with God in some sense. Verse 2 restates the claim to reinforce that this was true at the beginning.
Everything that came to be came through him The text shifts from who the Word is to what happened through him: “all things were made through him.” It then doubles the point in negative form: not even one created thing exists that did not come into being through him. The logic leaves no leftover category of “made things” outside his involvement.
Life becomes light, and light persists against darkness Next, the author says “in him was life,” treating life as something found in the Word. That life is then described as “the light of men,” meaning it brings illumination to humans. Historical Context
The Gospel of John is commonly located in the late first century AD, when Jewish communities and the Jesus-following movement were increasingly separating and redefining themselves after the destruction of Jerusalem and the temple in AD 70. The wider setting is Roman imperial rule, with Greek widely used across the eastern Mediterranean and Jewish Scripture frequently heard in Greek translation in many places. This opening sounds like a deliberate echo of Genesis’s first line, using familiar creation language to speak about reality’s beginnings and to set up the story that follows.
Theological Significance
John 1:1–5 opens before any events in Jesus’ earthly life and before creation itself. The text’s explicit claims are that “the Word” already existed “in the beginning,” that the Word was “with God,” and that the Word is described as God (vv. 1–2). It then says every created thing came into being through him (v. 3), so there is no created reality outside his involvement.

1) What “the Word” refers to. Within the Gospel’s flow, many readers take “the Word” as the personal subject who will later be identified with Jesus in the story. Others read “the Word” more as God’s self-expression or message that becomes personal in a later step, while still seeing vv. 1–5 as speaking about God’s reality before creation.
2) How to understand “the Word was God” alongside “with God.” The text holds together both closeness (“with God”) and identity-language (“was God”). Some interpreters say this is straightforwardly saying the Word shares God’s identity while also being distinguished from God. Others say the wording should be taken to mean the Word is divine in a strong sense without equating the Word exhaustively with “God” as a whole.
3) What “the darkness hasn’t overcome it” means. The verb can be heard as “defeat/overpower,” but it can also be heard as “grasp/understand.” On the first reading, darkness actively opposes the light but cannot extinguish it. On the second, darkness fails to comprehend or take in the light, even as the light continues shining.
Why the disagreement exists The passage uses compact, poetic statements that stack big claims with minimal explanation. Key phrases are both relational (“with God”) and identity-like (“was God”), and the closing line uses a verb that can naturally be translated in more than one way. Also, John’s images (“life,” “light,” “darkness”) can carry several overlapping meanings (vitality, truth, guidance, moral contrast), so readers decide what is primary based on the wider book.
What this passage clearly contributes This opening frames reality with the Word at the start: before anything made exists, the Word already is (vv. 1–2). It portrays creation as coming “through” him (v. 3), and it introduces the Gospel’s core imagery: the Word as the source of life, life as light for humans, and light as something that persists despite darkness (vv. 4–5). The passage thus sets a foundation for the story’s later claims about who the Word is and how the world responds to him (compare John 1:14).
