Question 1

What does “in the beginning” contribute to the passage’s claim about the Word?

Accepted Answer

“In the beginning” places the Word at the earliest conceivable point, before anything that “came into being.” The passage does not start with the Word’s origin but with the Word already existing (“was”). That sets a sharp contrast with v. 3, where the focus is on what “was made” or “came to be.” The effect is to separate the Word from the category of created things and to frame everything else as dependent. It also echoes creation language, making the reader think about the origin of the world as the backdrop for who the Word is.

Question 2

How do vv. 1–2 hold together “the Word was with God” and “the Word was God”?

Accepted Answer

Verse 1 uses two statements side by side: the Word is “with God” (suggesting relationship or shared presence), and the Word “was God” (suggesting a strong identification with God’s identity). Verse 2 repeats that the Word was with God “in the beginning,” reinforcing that this is not a temporary arrangement. The text itself does not explain the mechanics of how these fit; it simply asserts both. Interpreters therefore try to honor both ideas: distinction (“with”) and identity (“was”), without collapsing one into the other.

Question 3

What does v. 3 claim about the scope of creation “through” the Word?

Accepted Answer

Verse 3 makes a universal claim: “All things were made through him.” Then it restates the point negatively—nothing that has been made exists apart from him. The doubling is meant to close loopholes: there is no subset of created things that can be excluded from the Word’s involvement. The text does not specify the process implied by “through,” but it clearly assigns the Word a decisive role in the origin of everything that belongs to the “made” category. The Word is portrayed as active with respect to creation.

Question 4

How does v. 4 connect “life” and “light,” and what is “the light of men”?

Accepted Answer

Verse 4 first says “In him was life,” treating life as something found in the Word, not merely something he later provides. Then it adds that this life “was the light of men,” connecting life to illumination for humans. “Light” can suggest several overlapping ideas in John—understanding, guidance, exposure of what is true, and the life-giving presence that counters darkness. The verse does not narrow it to only one meaning, but it clearly makes the Word the source of what enables human beings to see and live rightly.

Question 5

What is the function of “darkness” in v. 5, and what are the two main ways to read “hasn’t overcome it”?

Accepted Answer

Darkness is presented as the contrasting environment or opposing force against which the light shines. The verse emphasizes that the shining is ongoing (“shines”), so the conflict is not merely past. “Hasn’t overcome it” can mean darkness cannot overpower or extinguish the light—light persists despite resistance. It can also mean darkness does not grasp or understand the light—light is present, but darkness fails to take it in. Either way, the point is the light’s continuing presence and the darkness’s failure to nullify it.

Question 6

How do vv. 1–5 set up major themes the Gospel will keep using?

Accepted Answer

These verses introduce a vocabulary that becomes the Gospel’s framework: “Word,” “life,” “light,” and “darkness.” The passage first identifies who the Word is in relation to God (vv. 1–2), then what the Word does in relation to the world (v. 3), then what the Word contains and communicates to humans (vv. 4–5). It sets expectations that the story is about more than events—it is about the world’s origin, the source of life, and an ongoing contrast between light and darkness that later scenes will develop.
